I'm Chrissie, from Scotland. Many people are not so fortunate; their homelands are devastated by war, suppression and persecution. I believe that no matter where you are born, you should have the right to live in a safe country.
There are millions of people displaced around the world, seeking a safe place to call home for themselves and their families. Since European countries closed their borders in March 2016, many of these people are stuck in Northern Greece in military-run refugee camps.
In May 2016 I started volunteering with refugees in several camps, before settling on a project I fell in love with. This project was started by a group of friends with the idea of opening a school in the Nea Kavala military camp, teaching children and adults, creating a community feeling and bringing people together through various creative activities.
Nea Kavala's community centre 'We Are Here' has gone through many changes since its humble beginnings, but the current problem is a lack of funds for long-term volunteers, who are essential in the daily running of the centre. Everyone involved in the project is unpaid, but our personal savings from which we live are running extremely low.
By donating, you will fund accomodation, food, transport and other small expenses for a long-term volunteer, and very directly help refugees feel more human, learn and have fun together. We are not solving the refugee crisis, but we are making it more bearable.
The people I have met here deserve so much more than the squalor and inhumanity they are living with. I know if you saw it first hand, you'd understand how important supporting them truly is. From them and from me, thank you for every donation, big or small.
