Our school will not qualify as a Title I School for the 2019-2020 school year.
What this means:
Our computer lab paraprofessional teaching position is funded by Title I Federal Funds but with the loss of Title I since we do not qualify based on free/reduced lunch, we are unable to keep our computer lab instruction for our students.
What is the result:
Students at NCES will not have computer lab as a block. The computers will be removed from the lab and placed in the classrooms for student use. Students will not receive keyboarding and computer program instruction.
Why is this important:
While many of our students use their chromebooks everyday for completing student work, the computer lab instruction provided keyboarding skills as well as direct instruction using computer games to enhance student learning. In elementary, students are expected to take the Georgia Milestones Assessment and complete their writing tasks/assignments online. Teaching keyboarding skills to our students in 1st and 2nd grade as well as building on these skills in 3rd - 5th grade are beneficial in helping students navigate their writing assignments as well as performance on writing tasks for the Georgia Milestones Assessment. Keyboarding is a lifelong skill needed by our students.
What we, as parents, can do:
We can give a small donation that will be combined with other monies to fund the computer lab paraprofessional teaching position. The PTO has organized a GoFundMe for this purpose.
Clearly, paying for a year of a paraprofessional teaching salary is big endeavor, but we have a plan! The PTO will assist in providing some of the necessary funding to keep our computer lab teaching position. Ms. Lassetter has some funds that we can use as well. The rest is up to you all!
We hope you feel that this would be a great loss to our school, and that you can make a difference. Our fundraising goal is $7500. If every parent gave $10 for each student they have at NCES, we would easily exceed this goal. All money collected will be used toward the salary of the Computer Lab Teacher. Remember that without your help, NCES will not be able to continue offering educational computer lab programs or keyboarding instruction.
