Nathan Bell Cancer Patient in China

Donation protected
Nathan Bell is a cancer patient currently undergoing treatment for bladder cancer in China. He lives in China because he is committed to the orphans who are born with cleft pallet, cleft lip, the "wrong" gender, or without family. Nathan was diagnosed with bladder cancer in 2013.  At first, he tried living with the pain. He tried Chinese alternatives to surgery. Finally, after several discouraging prognoses, he recently underwent a complete bladder removal. He chose to stay in China for treatment because he does not want to leave the orphans.

Because he lives in China, Nathan is unable to use his American medical insurance. Because he is not a Chinese citizen, he does not qualify for Chinese insurance. The entire cost of treatment and follow-up care is going to be out of pocket. We need 2,000 people to donate $30 each, to help cover the costs of treatment. If you can’t donate $30, please donate what you can. If you can donate more, please do.

After you donate, please share this on social media and email anyone you think might want to help. Please check back often and share it again. The only way we will reach this goal is if you help.

My Dad, Nathan, founded Home of Hope orphanages in 2000. Since then, he has been YeYe to more than 200 children, teaching them to be loving, responsible adults in Chinese society. He has founded two additional orphanages in China, and oversees their success from the main location in GongYi. And he still has children at all three orphanages today. Yeye means Grandpa, and that is what he has become to so many children, many of whom are now grown adults. When I asked him how he got the idea he said when he saw the children who didn’t know their Father it broke his heart.  He has been there ever since.

Growing up, my Dad was my biggest fan and my greatest hero.  He was the loudest one in the stands during my high school sports "career" and he knew all of my teammates by name. He taught me how to live without fear. He told me I could do just about anything as long as I worked hard. He taught me to love the outdoors and to love adventure. He taught me to shoot a gun and to lose with dignity and win with humility.  He taught me to love our country and Texas. He taught me it's ok to cry and even better to laugh. He taught me the importance of hard work. He taught me the importance of family. And now he is giving those same lessons to children in China.

I thought hospitals in America were bleak. But in a hospital room in China, watching my hero fight to get back to the children he loves, I realize how much Nathan gave up to help the least of these.

My Dad is laying in his hospital bed in China recovering. It's bleak and he gets cold.  Then he gets hot.  He's been having hallucinations and he gets scared of the nurses. His hands shake. He is weak and needs help rolling over to keep comfortable. But he's there. In the country with the people he loves, the people who call him YeYe. He's staying, and he needs our help.

Home of Hope Orphanages is one of a very few foreign-run orphanages in China. They love and care for the homeless children in three locations: Gongyi, XuZhou and PingYu.

Nathan was contacted by the government officials of KaiFeng China who have asked him to consider starting Home of Hope number four in their area. The need is great, and he wants to keep going. Even laying in the hospital bed, he told me he needed to get well so he can continue serving the children. There are so many without family. And Nathan believes that the lonely will be placed in families.
