Hi! My name is Naomi Jansson. I am 11 years old and am in 6th grade at Racine Montessori School in Wisconsin. I am asking for your support for a trip to Washington D.C. to present a documentary I made in a national competition. Watch it here.

About six months ago I attended the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra’s production of Shostakovich’s 10th symphony. That was when I first became interested in this composer. Everybody needs to know about Shostakovich because he shows us how to preserve your personal integrity even in hard times. What really drew me in was learning about the way that Shostakovich hid his initials in his music. When I had to select a topic for National History Day at school I chose to create a ten-minute documentary on his amazing story.

My documentary was selected for regionals, then state and finally nationals. Of the 10,000 Wisconsin kids who participated in National History Day this year, my project is one of 36 to get to this stage. In June I’ll be heading to D.C. to present my documentary to the judges, representing my school as part of Team Wisconsin.

The trip will be very expensive and that’s why I’m asking for your support. Once you include the registration fee, food and lodging, and transportation, the total cost is about $1,683. I’m still deciding whether I will stay in the dorm or not, so I don’t know exactly how much the final cost will be.

My school class has been very supportive and will be helping me raise money for my trip. If they help me exceed my goal I will use the extra money for the accommodation of my supporters (my teacher and my family are hoping to be there). Maybe I will even be able to take the Metro to go and see some of the national monuments while I am there.

Please know that this means a lot to me and it would make me very happy if I was able to go. I want to be able to do a good job representing my community and all the other children who worked hard on their National History Day projects from my school. Whatever amount of money you donate doesn’t matter but I’ll still be very thankful.

Thank you very much and I will give you the update after nationals!

Hello again! I want to thank all the donors that have given money towards my project. You were all so generous! In 6 days I have raised $680 with help from 21 people. Thanks so much!

Our fundraising efforts continue… My classmates, teacher and I are planning to have a booth at the Racine Lakefront Artist Fair at Festival Park, in Racine, on May 5th from 9:00 – 4:00. We will be selling awesome Team Naomi Shostakovich T-shirts and I hope to see some of you there! (If you would like a T-shirt but won’t be able to be there, please let me know and I’ll try to get you one.)

Also this weekend, in preparation for the national competition, I will be visiting a group of UW Milwaukee faculty members who are interested in documentaries. I will present my project to them and answer any questions that they have, to practice my public speaking skills for the interviews with the judges in D.C.

76 people have shared my GoFundMe page on Facebook. If you haven’t, please do share it with your friends and family so that I am able to complete my goal and go to D.C. Thanks again!
