Dedicated to ending the cycle of domestic & sexual violence in Wake County, InterAct saves lives, rebuilds lives, and secures safer futures for victims and survivors and their families.

Who is InterAct?
In 2009, InterAct opened a first-of-its-kind Family Safety & Empowerment Center. Families struggling with abuse can come to the Center and not only receive InterAct’s crisis intervention services, but also continue on to safe, self-sufficient, stable lives through the long-term supports of eight onsite collaborative partners. Last year, InterAct served nearly 63,000 men, women and children – 9,600 of whom were direct victims of domestic and/or sexual violence.

What Do they Do?
Crisis Lines: InterAct’s three 24-hour crisis lines and
emergency shelter serve as lifelines for victims and
survivors of domestic and sexual violence who need to
take immediate steps toward achieving safety. During
times of crisis, victims are able to reach help through
InterAct’s three 24-hour crisis lines. Along with crisis
counseling by phone, victims plan for their immediate
safety and are introduced to InterAct’s seamless
continuum of care.

Emergency Shelter: Often, a victim seeking InterAct’s
shelter shows up at our door with little more than a
toothbrush. From the first day she enters our eight week residential program, the victim begins working with a counselor to develop a safety plan and plan for her future. InterAct’s program works. Nationally,
approximately 60% of all shelter residents return to their abusers; however, more than 90% of InterAct’s residents do NOT return.

Court Advocacy: InterAct has a full-time presence in
each of Wake County’s two domestic violence court
rooms. Court advocates guide victims through the
complicated legal process providing safety planning.
Victims can also complete and electronically file an
order of protection, have the case heard before a judge
via video-conference and receive a temporary order of
protection – all at InterAct.

How InterAct Rebuilds Lives
Individual and Group Counseling: Victims of domestic
violence need a range of support services. Some need
shelter; others simply need a place to process the abuse
that occurred in their lives. Victims can see individual
counselors and participate in one or more of 14 ongoing
specialized support groups – all at no charge.

Solace Center:
Opened within the Family Safety &
Empowerment Center in April 2011, InterAct’s Solace
Center is NC’s first community-based sexual assault
forensic examination center, providing victims with
specialized nursing care, forensic evidence collection and InterAct’s seamless continuum of services – outside of the often chaotic, conspicuous environment of a hospital Emergency Department and all under one roof.

How They Secure Safer Futures
Community Awareness: Domestic violence is the single greatest cause of injury to women ages 15 to 44.
Through InterAct’s outreach to more than 53,000
members of our community, we assist survivors, raise
community awareness, and move the needle on our
ultimate goal of breaking the cycle of violence.
Youth Education Services: Prevention is the key to
breaking the cycle of violence for future generations of
victims. The Youth Education Services (YES) Program
provides for a full violence prevention and early
intervention curriculum to 9,500 students in Wake
County schools in grades 3-12.

Why it Matters
It is estimated that 1 in 3 women living in Wake County
will experience domestic violence in her lifetime. Since the opening of InterAct’s Family Safety & Empowerment Center, the demand for our services has tripled. Nine years ago, 7 families walked through InterAct’s doors each day. Today it’s 23. Increased demand and decreased funding isn’t a good formula for families in need. Now, more than ever, we need your support.
