Nala The Frenchie

**WE DID IT!!! Thanks to you, she’s home and made it through surgery.**

**UPDATE 2** I just saw Nala again and she’s struggling to breathe - not doing as well as this morning. However no more seizures since this morning. Upon recommendation and discussion, I am increasing the goal to be sure that any complications that arise will be covered and Nala will get everything she needs. Any funds not used for Nala’s medical care will be used to help another Frenchie in need. Again, thank you all so much!!

** UPDATE** Nala will be having emergency surgery tomorrow morning to breathe. She will then need a neurological consult as she suffered another Grand Mal seizure this morning. She also injured her eye during seizure which will require attention. I’m so overwhelmed by the love and generosity we have received and thank you doesn’t seem to be enough.

Many of you have followed the story of Nala, but here’s a recap of the $20 Frenchie who has defied many odds in the last 2 weeks. I am asking for help to pay for her surgery to help her breathe...

I was sitting by the pool one Saturday morning when posts on my Frenchie pages started flying about a Frenchie in a shelter near my home. I jumped in and offered to got get her and intended to turn her over to rescue or another member. Well, one look and she was mine. My 14 year old and I waited and the gate of the shelter for more than 2 hours knowing there would be many interested in this baby, especially since all adoption fees were waived and where else would you get avFrenchie for $20? We had to argue with people trying to cut the line and in the end my daughter jumped out of the car and ran to the front door to avoid the people who got outbid their car and were walking to the front of the line to be first. There were more than 20 people that showed up just in the hour I was there.

Being a Frenchie owner and lover, I knew however that a Frenchie sitting in the shelter most likely meant something was wrong. When we were finally able to see her she was in bad shape. She was extremely underweight and had trouble breathing. The next few times we saw her she got worse. Because she was microchipped she was on a 5 day stray hold and that didn’t count the days they were closed and the holiday. We went to see her again on the last day of her stray hold and she had puss coming from areas of her body puss shouldn’t come from. Her eyes were crusted over, she smelled really bad, I noticed she had a bone protruding out of her side, and her breathing sounded worse. She was in bad shape and I was concerned she would t survive the spay surgery which was mandatory for her adoption.

Nobody came for this sweet little girl. She’s 5 years old and was used for breeding and discarded like trash.

Much to our surprise and that of the shelter staff, she made it through the surgery and after 11 days there she was allowed to come home. The medical release I signed stated she was in “poor condition.” She was struggling to breathe on the drive home. We saw our vet the next day and there were nodules on her lungs. She confirmed that Nala had several litters. Her thyroid was low and her liver high. She stated the protruding bone was most likely a broken rib that was never repaired. She was malnourished, hair following out, bald spots and very sick. We started on supplements and antibiotics. When the doctor drew blood, Nala turned blue from not breathing.

The second morning home, I went to wake Nala and she stopped breathing. I attempted to breathe into her nose and mouth and pat her lungs. It took about 30-45 seconds for her to breathe again. I spent the next 2 hours shaking and crying. When the vet called me back she advised that Nala had pneumonia which Exacerbated her inability to breathe due to her anatomic make up (super smushy face).

Nala started eating well and continued improving over the next few days. As she felt better, she moved more. This resulted in an emergency visit to the animal hospital last Saturday night when she was unable to walk. Turns out she has hip dysplasia and arthritis most likely due to trauma. She was in so much pain, she wouldn’t eat or drink and she spent the next day in the hospital for IV fluid and observation. Monday morning was rough as she continued to refuse to eat which meant several attempts to shove medication down her throat. That was fun. Luckily she started eating again Monday night. On Thursday, We saw a specialist and we are under her care and working through rehab in an effort to avoid surgery for this issue.

Today we saw Dr Horgan, the surgeon who will perform surgery to repair Nala’s Brachiocephalic issues. Dr Horgan performed the same surgery on my Zeus and we have had great results. The surgery is estimated to be approximately $3,300 - $4,200. I will find a way to get her the help she needs, even if it means selling an organ (mine not hers lol). However, I could use some help. If you could find it in your heart to donate, Nala and I would be eternally grateful!! No amount is too small and every dollar will help.

Thank you for all of your support through this adventure. Nala is amazing and we are so blessed she came into our lives. She deserves a better life than she had and she is living it.
