With much confusion, regret, shock, and pain we turn to you all for help.
We never thought we would be on this side of a GoFundMe fundraising campaign- but unfortunately, we are left with no choice. Two of our family homes have been destroyed in the Ben Shemen forest fire.
Thursday afternoon began like any other until the serenity of Moshav Mevo Modi’im was shattered by frantic firefighters with megaphones ordering everyone to evacuate the area immediately. Not realizing that we were never to return, we left everything behind and walked out the door with nothing but water and our phones. Basic necessities for a few minutes out in the sun. We quickly realized it was very serious, being ordered to jump into any car with available space and relocate to anywhere but here.
Within 20 minutes- our houses were going up in flames. 45 out of the 50 homes in the community were burned to the ground.
The first home belongs to our parents- Sara and Aryeh. They made aliya from London and San Francisco to set up their lives on the moshav. They raised their four beloved children in our family home. The home where it all started, where we took our first steps and where the grandchildren loved to visit. Their home of 30 years where they left everything behind; from daily necessities to art pieces, from family photos to record collections. Everything is gone.
The second home belongs to Gavriel (the second child), his wife Nikki and their precious puppy Maple. Because their home was located on the other side of the moshav it suffered the least amount of damage- but is still unlivable. Their home was more than a home just to them- it was a home for so many. Over the past two years they have hosted literally hundreds of people; people with nowhere to go, people seeking comfort. Their hearts and home were open to everyone.
Right now we are super overwhelmed and not quite yet sure where to start; how to go about rebuilding our lives from scratch. Having to find places to live for all of our affected family members who have nowhere to return; buying everything from underwear to refrigerators.
What we do know is that we will need all of the help that we can get.
