My name is Nadine Richards and I am a para-athlete born and raised in Calgary, Alberta.
I was born missing my left arm at the elbow and only have three fingers on my right hand. When I was three months old, I had a bilateral symes surgery to remove both of my feet because they were deformed. I learned to walk on two prosthetic legs below the knee.
Four years ago, my brother introduced me to snowboarding. I started by going out a few times a year, enjoying being able to ride alongside family and friends. In November 2018, I attended a Paralympic athlete search in Calgary and had the honour of being introduced to one of the Canada Snowboard coaches. I was invited to attend my first training camp with the National Team and coach for para-snowboard in January 2019.
That camp was followed by my first Snowboard Cross NORAM competition at Big White in Kelowna, BC. My hard work was tested and I was able to push myself to win Gold at this event. Following my initial successes, I attended another two-week camp in May 2019 in Whistler and learned the amazing news that I had been selected to join the NextGen training team for Canada Snowboard.
For the 2019/2020 season, I will be travelling nationally and internationally to different training camps and competitions practicing both Snowboard Cross and Banked Slalom.
I look forward to furthering my career with the NextGen team, and have set personal goals to make it onto the National Team and qualify for the Team Canada contingent that will be competing at the 2022 Paralympics in Beijing, China.
Through your generous donations, I will be able to attend future camps that will enable me to further develop my skills, and achieve my goals of becoming the first bilateral female amputee competing in this event.
