Christina's Fight

I've had the pleasure of knowing Christina Rucker for the past five years.  Christina is a 31 year old single mom. She has been a Bethel School District employee for 8 years. She worked in the CTE Department for 7.5 of those years and recently took a position as a Title 1 Lap technician. Many of you are familiar with Christina's situation. It was four short years ago when Christina showed me a lump on her leg and asked if I thought it was anything to be concerned about. Of course I said "no". However, with the "C" word becoming common place these days we thought it best she have it checked out. The news was not good. Christina was diagnosed with a rare type of cancer, called Ewings Sarcoma. This disease effects only 3 in 1,000,000 young adults. After trying to wrap her brain around the news, she dove right into aggressive chemo therapy, fought a year long battle, and came out the victor! Christina has been cancer free for the past three years. Today however, the fight goes on. There are battles to win and this next one is a tough one. Her cancer has recently showed up in her lungs. If you know Christina, she is up for the challenge! What keeps her fighting are her three young children. Karter is 12, Abigale is 8, and Riley is 7. She is determined to be here for them. When I think of the many people with whom I have crossed paths with, Christina is one that has effected my life in many ways. She has showed me strength, patience, perseverance, a little craziness at times (who doesn't) and a great sense of humor throughout these trying times. Her laughter is contagious and so are the silly antidotes she comes up with. Christina is an Overcomer! If I were cancer, I would be very afraid of Christina Rucker! Join us in the fight with her!  --  Doris Hominda

I have known Christina since I hired her to work in Bethel.  She is everything above that Doris shared and more.  She has had many obstacles over the past decade, but she continues to push on, including attending college to pursue a degree.  I don't always know how to support people dealing with way bigger problems than I have ever known, but I thought if friends and family could get together to fund Christina and her children a fun vaction or help with expenses in any way, it would bring some needed distraction to everyone.  -- Mike Christianson

Christina is undergoing treatment and the side effects seem to be unpredictable. Good days and bad, but her spirit remains high. If all goes well, Christina should be down to one medication in September instead of the four she takes now. She will undergo another round next week.

On a happy note, all of your donations and prayers are finally helping Christina get her family to Disneyland in late July. She is really excited about spending a special vacation with her children.

On Christina's behalf, I thank you for all of the support!

Christina has finished her last round of chemo and is hoping to return to work next week. The chemo has not been an overall success for her, but she is hopeful that a new treatment process will be successful. Christina will be joining an immunotherapy trial soon. More to come. Here is what it is...

Immunotherapy, also called biologic therapy, is a type of cancer treatment designed to boost the body's natural defenses to fight the cancer. It uses materials either made by the body or in a laboratory to improve, target, or restore immune system function.

Keep sending your thoughts, prayers and support! Thanks!

Christina had her second round of treatments yesterday and we are hoping she responds a bit better this time.

Thank you for the prayers and donations, Christina really appreciates it.

Christina says "that cancer is scared to let her go, but really should just move on." :)))

We all agree!
