Rachel's Medical Relief Fund

Hi everyone, this is Elvia, one of Ruben and Rachel's daughters.  I am setting this page up because my dad will never ask for help.  He is too proud and has always told us since we were young that he would work himself to death in order to provide for his family and make ends meet.  Last night, as I was cleaning up the kitchen I could hear my dad sitting at his desk going through papers and bills and as I watched him, I saw the weight of the world sitting on his shoulders and it broke my heart.  Not only is he saddened at seeing his wife and best friend deteriorate everyday but the financial part that comes along with her illness is weighing heavily on him.  He has a stack of my mom's medical bills that for every one he pays, he adds 2 or 3 in its place.   I prayed that I could somehow pay all his bills so that he could focus on what matters right now, spending time with his wife.  My sisters and I (along with other family) are rotating caring for my mom so that he can continue to work.  Although I know my mom is savoring her final days with her children, she always asks "Where's your dad? When will he be home?"
So here is the short version of her journey: Back in Nov of 2012, our mom Rachel was diagnosed with cancer.  It is still to this day unknown where the root of the cancer began, gastric or pancreatic.  Since then it has been a long journey filled with chemo, trials, remissions, good days and bad, and many waiting periods.  This past Nov. (2014), we received the news that the tumor had spread to her liver.  She agreed to continue the recommended treatments and underwent surgery in order to try and remove the tumor.  The surgery was unsuccessful due to the size and that the tumor was attached to her rib.  Her doctors did not recommend removing the tumor because of the danger of the cancer cells spreading into her bone.  Our hopes rested on the new trial chemo that she began in January of this year.  Unfortunately she ended up almost dying from chemo toxicity and all the complications that have come along with it.   All her children came to see her this Feb and at that time she informed us that she has come to the decision of no longer continuing the chemotherapy or any treatment.  She has more faith than anyone I know and has said to us that God will decide her future and to leave her in His hands.  That is what she has peace with and that is currently where we stand.
She continues to have good days and bad days.  I honestly believe the good days are heard and answered prayers where God allows us to see glimmers of our mom, small gifts from Him to us to remind us that He is good.
So many have been asking us how they can help.  This is an answer that came to us, any contribution is of great help and would help my dad put a dent into some of the expenses and something that is accessible to those both near and far.  More than anything though, we continue to rely on your prayers and appreciate you taking the time to read my mom and dad’s journey.
God Bless,
Perez children
