Gabby's Emergency Fundraiser

“Once you have had a wonderful dog, a life without one, is a life diminished.”  -- Dean Koontz

Gabby and I met in Edmond, Oklahoma.  She was a beautiful husky with Pet Angels Rescue who needed a forever home.  The first three years of her life were not easy.  I remember the first time I tried to touch her belly she yelped and got away as fast as she could because she wasn't used to human touch.  That was just one of the things that changed after she was brought into our home.

Love and affection became part of her everyday life. She began to blossom right before our eyes. We got to see the real Gabby who, like her namesake, is the perfect sidekick in any situation. She is vivacious, loving, and full of equal parts sweetness and spirit. There is almost nothing she loves better now than snuggling up next to her humans and having her belly rubbed (except maybe teasing her brother Mojo – she likes that quite a lot).

She changed our lives as well. She helped to heal the broken heart that followed in the wake of the death of my dog Ramsey who had been my companion for 17 years. Everyday she teaches me about living in the moment and appreciating the little things in life. When she looks at me there is such boundless trust and love in her eyes that I feel my heart could melt if it wasn't already so joyous.

Gabby got sick one morning this week, and after consulting with the vets office over the phone, we thought that it was simply normal indigestion. The next day her problems hadn't gone away so we took her in for a visit. It wasn't until x-rays were taken that we realized there was a problem that no one had foreseen. She went into surgery immediately and what followed was a whirlwind.

In the past four days she has had two major surgeries (totaling almost six hours), IV drips, countless x-rays and medications, overnight stays at both her vets office and at the ER, and treatments for fluid in her lungs that have led to pneumonia. I told the surgeon at the ER that all he needed to think about was what would give her the greatest quality of life and to make his decisions based on that and not anything else. She has proven through it all that she is a fighter. Along the way she has won over everyone who has worked on her with her combination of sweetness and indomitable spirit.

I believe that when you adopt a dog you should be prepared to be financially responsible for their well being for the rest of their lives. However, I don't think many people expect that after six short months their dog will face a life threatening emergency. With or without donations I will find a way to pay for Gabby's vet bills because I believe that it is what anyone would do for someone that they love. However, the immediacy of this event combined with the unexpected and extreme nature of the procedures has led me to put pride aside and seek help.

Donations will go towards paying bills from the emergency vet and her vet clinic. I would be happy to provide photos of these bills and their break downs for any interested parties (though the amounts I have now are only for the last four days and she still has at least 72 hours of post-op care which I have not received any pricing on yet). If, by some miracle, the amount donated exceeds the amount needed then any remainder will be donated to Pet Angels Rescue to help the lives of other dogs like Gabby who are looking for their own second chance at life.

All donations, big or small, would be greatly appreciated. Your donation would quite literally be helping in a life or death situation. Gabby is just three years old and has a long life ahead of her full of adventures and the kind of mischief only a husky can manage. She is not just a 'rescue dog' or a 'beloved pet'. Gabby is a member of our family and an intrinsic part of our hearts. Losing her would be like losing all the sunsets that you forgot to watch until one day you saw one blazing in all its glory. Please help us save her life. Please help us save our hearts.

**For each donation, no matter the size, I will volunteer time at a local animal shelter.  I am happy and willing to give back to other animals the help that you are giving to mine.
