Helping To Heal A "Broken" Heart

$1,020 of $1,000 goal

Hi! My name is Maria and I'm a single mom of 4 (3 live at home still) who just had her feet swept out from under her by a medical emergency.
On 5/4/2018 I woke up and couldn't breathe. Since I have asthma I thought I was just having an asthma attack and took my medicine. When that didn't help and I kept getting worse, I called 911. My local ED (Emergency Department) had me transferred to the ICU in St. Francis Hospital in Peoria. Since the original plan was to transfer me to a more local hospital, when the plan changed to a hospital with an open bed in the ICU? I knew something was up.
An echo-cardiogram showed some rather severe damage to my heart - one of the left chambers barely functions at all and there are 2 pretty severe blockages. The official diagnosis? Congestive heart failure after a prior heart attack. I didn't even know I'd HAD a heart attack!
An angiogram and cardiac MRI later: surgery to clear the blockages is ruled out for the time being, it MIGHT be an option further down the road. I was finally discharged to home - I have to wear a device called Life Vest for the next 3 months (it's an external defibrillator that will shock my heart into beating if it stops) and will be on medications for my heart for the rest of my life, of course.
So why isn't this in medical? Because the medical part of this adventure is mainly covered. My insurance will be paying the hospital and doctor bills and covering any future charges. BUT: it cost me over $1300 just to get to be able to come home. They wouldn't discharge me until I had the Life Vest and there was a $1000 deposit for that - then meds cost $350 for a 3 month supply.
As someone who usually can't even afford to pay attention, this took a big toll on my finances. I would really like to be able to replace that money so I don't have to worry about the basics while my heart is healing. I'm not allowed to work for the time being so I need to apply for assistance but that will take a bit of time, if I'm even approved.
So, if you can help out? That would be beyond awesome. If you can't? No problem but maybe you could help spread the word?

Thank You for Reading,
Maria

MAJOR UPDATE!

Well.. maybe I should have knocked on wood while updating in the past? On June 10th I started having chest pain and trouble breathing again so 911 was called once more. This time I ended up being taken to the ER in Morris, Illinois and then sent to Rush Copley in Aurora, Illinois (the Dr who looked at me in Morris works with my mom's cardiologist - they take very good care of my mom so I told the Dr I wanted to be sent where HE thought was best) and admitted to the ICU right away.

On Tuesday I had TRIPLE bypass surgery. Triple is bolded because in that monthish between hospitals it went from 2 blockages to 3...

Two and a half weeks later, I'm home and I AM knocking on wood when I say I feel fabulous. Or as fabulous as one who can't do anything can feel, lol. But seriously, every day I feel better than I did the day before and it can only continue to get better. *knocks on wood again*

In the meantime we're still struggling financially and can still use any help anyone can spare. Luckily the SNAP benefits I applied for should be approved soon so any money raised can go towards something we need besides food while waiting to see if I get approved for disability.

I'm continuing to do well - not that I'm ready to climb a mountain or anything! I can barely walk a block and a half to the neighborhood store. (And am grateful that I CAN do that!) When I came home I was taking 5 pills a day, that's now up to 12 with a 13th (nitroglycerin) if needed: this makes me feel like things AREN'T progressing well. But I know that the changes are meant to help, and they have, and I DO feel better these days.

SO. Since there isn't much medically to update about I figured I'd talk about this campaign. The original plan was to let it run for a month while I got my finances worked out. The new plan it to let it run a bit longer as my finances ARE NOT worked out. My only income has trickled down to less than $100 a month and I've had to apply for any/all assistance I could, including disability. None of it has come through yet so I could use all the help I can get for the time being. Hopefully things will work out real soon! *crosses fingers*

Many, many thanks and virtual hugs to those who have been able to donate so far. <3

First post hospital Dr. visit today. For someone who's heart decided to go on strike not 2 weeks ago, I'm doing well.. I just didn't realize how much my life was going to change. Even though I feel like the same Maria, I'm not the same Maria. That makes me kind of sad but I AM going to make that a positive thing. Next appointment is the 25th (after that they hope to have a home health nurse set up to come in at least once a week) - and I need to get a sleep study done too. Fun stuff there! :)
