Directed by award-winning filmmaker Rafael Flores, "My People Are Rising" is an independent film based on the autobiography of a 19 year old Black Panther captain named Aaron Dixon. Over five years ago, Mr. Dixon approached Rafael about turning his autobiography into a film, but it took many years to find the time and money to get the project off the ground. With the sucess of the project raising some money last year through public grants, we need your support to complete the film.
Structured as an experimental docu-drama, the film traces the course of Aaron Dixon’s politicization, and that of a young generation frustrated with injustice in communities of color. Through a mixture of dramatic re-enactments and interviews with key community leaders, the film attests to the courage and commitment of young people who rose up in rebellion, risking their lives in the name of freedom. “My People Are Rising” is an untold tale of the triumphs, tragedies and sacrifices young people made to establish an enduring legacy for activists in California. The film will preserve the early history of the Black Panther party for younger generations, explore the difficult decisions Dixon had to make for his family, analyze the fall of Huey Newton, celebrate the election of the first Black mayor of Oakland, and acknowledge the rise of the first female leader in the party: Elaine Brown.
This is a community-based project and we need as much support as possible to get this important film created. It is a co-production between professional artists from the Green Eyed Media collective and youth artists from the non-profit, United Roots, located in West Oakland.
We have already completed 50 minutes of the intended 100 minute film. Your contribution will go towards paying the youth film crew, actors, props, costumes, permits, film festival fees, transportation and honorariums for the Black Panther Elders.
