ABOUT ZOMIA
Launched in 2014, Zomia provides student loans to talented students from marginalized communities in Southeast Asia, with a focus on Myanmar. Zomia is a social purpose corporation based in Seattle, WA.
BACKGROUND
Hi, I'm Kirk. I'm one of the guys who helped start Zomia and this GoFundMe page. Ten years ago I took a trip to Thailand to learn about Myanmar's democracy movement, which at the time operated in exile from Thailand.
On the trip, I met talented students from Myanmar who couldn't continue their studies beyond high school. One of the biggest obstacles in their way was funding. Scholarships were scarce and student loans either didn't exist or required collateral. Those most on the margins—refugees, migrants, internally displaced persons—didn't have property or formal income and were too risky to receive loans from traditional banks. But the demand for financial services was there.
We launched Zomia because we believe that the financial system should work for everyone, especially when it comes to education. We've embraced the challenge of extending loans to students in hard-to-reach communities, and we are working to create a world where students can finance their education based on their potential instead of their circumstance.
To date, Zomia has funded more than $500,000 in student loans and helped 128 students unlock their potential through higher education. We have far to go but are also well on our way. We'd love for you to join us!
