Save the Birds!

Donation protected
Many songbird species in North America have recently become vulnerable to extinction.  Species that were once considered common, and widespread, are now disappearing.  Especially vulnerable are those species that feed on flying insects, high in the air column (also known as aerial insectivores).   The rates of decline for these species are extreme and severe:

Barn Swallow  - 76% decline *

Chimney Swift  -  46% decline @

Common Nighthawk – 49.5% decline%

Many of these species are now protected under the Canadian Endangered Species Act. As the rate of decline continues, there is a good chance that future generations will never get to see or experience these amazing creatures.  Should these species disappear, a giant gap in the planets ecosystem is probable.  The impacts of this collapse, to not only the functioning of the planet, but humanity, is unknown but likely severe.

Please help the Simcoe County Banding Group collect data on these high flying birds.  With your donation, Simcoe County Banding Group is seeking to purchase one set of canopy mist nets.  Mist nets, are an important but safe tool use to collect information about a variety of ecological and species specific conditions.   They can only be purchased by a permit holder.  When properly used, canopy nets appear to be almost invisible and are made of a very fine, fabric mesh suspended between two pulleys.  They have trammels, or pockets, created by a horizontally strung line.  When a bird hits the net, it falls into this pocket.  Simcoe County Banding Group extracts the bird, measures its wing length, amount of fat, and, if possible, identify age and sex.  A band (or bracelet) is attached to the leg of the bird with a unique number identifier.   A canopy mist net will specifically allow to target these high flying species.

Simcoe County Banding Group is a Nonprofit Organization, passionate about the conservation of birds and dedicated to bird research.  Founded in 2005, its mission is to educate others regarding the importance of bird life and banding.  Every dollar received will go directly to purchasing canopy mist nets for data collection.
