My wife Debra has ALS
Donation protected
Debra has been ill for sometime. It started about July 2018 with arm and leg issues, and numerous falls. She went from using a cane, then a walker, and now she uses a wheelchair.
A little about Debra. She was an Air Force spouse for over 20 years. Raised three great children, Was a terrific spouse, mother and homemaker. Debra ran a Canine Search and Rescue team for many years in Moore, OK. She and her family moved to the Checotah area after their home in Moore was destroyed in May 2013 by an F-5 tornado. Debra, her husband, daughter and granddaughter where in the home when the tornado struck.
Her legs can move only slightly on good days, and she has very little to no use of her hands and arms.
She received the actual diagnoses of ALS on 4 April 2019 at ST Johns Hospital in Tulsa, OK.
We where told Debra had a very aggressive form of ALS and would be dead in 2 to 6 months; without a feeding tube and Intubation the doctors gave her 2 months at most to live.
Debra is a very strong woman and is beating the odds as she has outlived expectations without breathing and feeding tube assistance.
Debra, has very good insurance, better than most. But even with that it will not provide the specialty equipment she needs for her disease.
Currently the family has no way of safely getting Debra to much needed doctor appointments.
Debra needs the following.
A modification done to the family vehicle. The modification is to the front passenger seat. It allows the seat to rotate and lower down for safe and easy transfer in and out of the vehicle. The seat alone is between $8,000.00 and $9,000.00 installed.
See Link---Vehicle Modification
Sadly Debra's insurance does not cover this type of specialty equipment.
A new wheel chair made specifically for ALS patients.
A custom wheel chair for an ALS patient runs in the range of $20,000.00 to $30,000.00 Possibly higher depending on specific needs of the patient. Insurance will cover 80 percent of this cost . Even so 5 to 7 thousand for a wheelchair is difficult to come up with.
The modification to Debra's vehicle is the most pressing issue at this time. Without this modification, Debra has no way to get to much needed appointments for treatments related to her disease..
Debra's family is grateful for anything anyone may be inclined to give, and we thank you in advance.
Sincerely,
The Potter Family
