Mustang Bandits @ ADS to DI Globals!

THE MUSTANG BANDITS - A CONCORD NH DESTINATION IMAGINATION TEAM - NEEDS YOUR HELP TO GET TO GLOBAL FINALS!

We are the Mustang Bandits from Concord NH and we participate in Destination Imagination—an educational program that helps students learn valuable skills like creative and critical thinking, problem solving and teamwork through different STEAM-based (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) Challenges.   All this done with a strict "no interference" policy that ensures that the students discuss, develop and implement their OWN challenge solution without adult influence.

As a team of 3rd graders from Abbot-Downing School, they chose from the many challenges and decided to compete in the Fine Arts challenge called Game On. After an exciting and unexpected journey that took them from just starting out to winning Regionals and then taking first place in our division for States as well, they are excited to count themselves among one of the top-scoring Destination Imagination teams in our state and to have the opportunity to present our Challenge solution at Global Finals—an international academic competition where we will compete against teams in our Challenge from around the globe.

This year, Global Finals will take place in Kansas City, Missouri. Teams that earn the rare opportunity to attend Global Finals are responsible for their own fundraising to cover their costs. Because getting to the competition is expensive, our team would welcome your support in meeting our Global Finals fundraising efforts.

We would greatly appreciate any amount you might be able to donate to allow us to take advantage of this opportunity which has built important skills in creativity, problem solving and teamwork!

***Monies collected via GoFundMe will be personally withdrawn into page owner's personal account (Carolyn O'Connor - parent of DI student) and then a check written for entire amount to be given to Abbot-Downing School earmarked for the Mustang Bandits.  All withdrawals and movement of money will be updated accordingly. ***

Want to know more?

As a first year Destination Imagination (DI) team, we had no idea what we were undertaking.  This team of young, energetic 3rd graders somehow were able to come together in a short span of time and achieved more than was ever expected.

As we have now experienced for ourselves, DI inspires and equips students to become innovators and leaders. Each year, DI publishes seven new standards-based team Challenges containing various elements of STEM such as Fine Arts, Engineering, Improv Theatre, Visual Arts, and Community Service. One of the most impacting elements of DI is the belief in “no interference.”  Kids work completely independently on creative ideas and trial-and-error solutions to challenges. Parents do not assist with costumes, props, scripts, or ideas.

Our Elementary level team, competing against teams from 3rd through 5th grade, participated in a Fine Arts challenge called Game On. We placed 1st in the Regional Tournament and also 1st in the State Tournament.  The Fine Arts challenge sets out to help students develop acting and creative skills through artistic media, theater arts, script writing, and prop design.  Our team had to create and present a story that integrates research of a team selected game, create and present a game gizmo that causes an action or event to  occur, design and create a container that goes through a transformation, design either the game gizmo or the container to be a technical element, and create and present two Team Choice Elements that show off the team’s interests, skills, areas of strength, and talents. All this with NO interference from adults!

Our school district has been wonderfully supportive of our teams' unexpected success, but now we need your help to raise $10,000 in funding in order to get us the rest of the way there!

PLEASE help send the Mustang Bandits to Global Finals to see through this exciting journey.   Their hard work and ideas have earned them this opportunity.

***The Details***
My name is Carolyn O'Connor and I am an obviously proud parent of one of the members of the Mustang Bandits - I also happen to be a Concord School district educator.  I, and the rest of the team parents and coaches, are raising these funds to offset the unexpected costs associated with travel and boarding for the members of the team and one adult chaperone per child.   Flights alone for each of the 7 children and one parent chaperone each will cost at least $7500 total, with basic lodging costing around another $3000. Our school district has graciously supported us with the registration fees and transport for our game gizmo and props has been fund-raised for separately. Funds will be withdrawn privately (by myself) and then provided to the district whom will reimburse families to offset these unexpected costs and/or pay the vendors directly.

WANT TO LEARN MORE ABOUT WHAT WE DID?

Elementary Level Fine Arts Challenge: Game On

What We Did:

The Mustang Bandits decided to use the game Uno Attack as inspiration for their Game On challenge.  They then went to work as a team developing a storyline and props.  They brainstormed, edited and created a script for their performance. They built scenery items and a large Uno Attacker gizmo.  In order to do this they had to learn budgeting skills, safe tool handling, building concepts, measurement, and endless teamwork.  They worked and refined their story and prop designs until they felt they had met their challenge.

The Performance:

To complete the challenge, the kids rehearsed, adapted and reworked their performance piece.  In their performance, a girl rides on the back of a raven over a forest when they come upon a life sized Uno Attacker who has turned a little girl into an Uno card.  They must play the Uno Attacker in order to free the little girl, but if they fail, they too will become a card.... and all of this had to be presented within an 8 minute window of time.

Their performance included information about the creator of their game, and they had to learn about stage presence, timing, and more teamwork.  They also adapted their game gizmo and performance after each tournament to continually better meet their challenge.
