Plant Studios' Artsboretum

$77 of $900 goal

This GoFundMe exists to find kindred spirits, with the hope of creating a more organic, sustainable and equitable music industry.

My name is Mari, and I'm a singer who worked at The Plant Studios from 2000 to 2008. I first went there as an artist, volunteered to help manage events, and eventually found myself doing everything from melting ice off the rooftop air conditioner (necessary to keep the SSL from overheating) to booking acts, running errands for "room temperature bottled water" and much more.

My favorite part of the job was when Arne (Frager, my husband) engaged in artist development and non-profit projects.
As the traditional  music and recording industry took a downturn, it became more difficult to engage in these efforts, to be philanthropic. So, finding inspiration from the Sundance Institute and seeing parallels to the social enterprise/conscious capitalism movements, I started researching feasibility and community need for a non-profit project sometime around the early 2000s.

Essentially, our first non-profit project, A Vehicle for Change, was a way to expand upon the Plant Studios' service to the local music and non-profit communities (as in "music is a vehicle for change.) We started to get some press and people seemed genuinely excited about what we were attempting to build.
However, in March of 2008, when The Plant Studios ceased operating in Sausalito, we lost our home base and it was a huge setback, but I kept adapting programs and did my best to figure out how to use my skill set for good.  In 2009, with help from the Community Media Center of Marin, I managed to get Mick Fleetwood to make us a public service announcement.

We secured a fiscal sponsor, International Humanities Center, and started to do some work in the community, such as securing transportation for Young Performers International scholarship students.
Unfortunately, our fiscal sponsor closed abruptly in 2012 and took the money in our account.  It was about $900.

Needless to say, that was discouraging. So, I put that project on the back burner and decided to offer some services without tax exempt status. I watched from the sidelines as several other groups used the video I created to try to raise funding for their own version of a preservation effort.

I didn't say much at the time, because I was just happy someone else cared about the place, but in my heart I know this project is the best fit for the space and our music/arts community.

This fundraiser is to regain our lost funding and start back up again.
$900 to file our 501 (c) 3

When I was a kid. living in the projects in NJ,  I used to listen to great music over a little radio that sat on a shelf above the washing machine. Amazing music used to flow out of that radio: Smokey Robinson, Aretha Franklin, The Rascals, Marvin Gaye, Dusty Springfield, Petula Clark, many more.  The music soothed and inspired me.

When we were able to upgrade to a stereo, the music ranged from big band jazz to album oriented rock. One thing all this music had in common:
Music was played by talented musicians and singers and the magic was captured by skilled audio engineers.

If you love organic music and believe in the power of music to change lives and heal the world, please join this effort. Musicians and the people who help make the music deserve to get paid for our work. Help us protect and preserve our music legacy and create some jobs!

Thank you for your consideration!
