The "Music Mind" Book 2019

Donation protected
"Music Mind" is, first of all, a practical guide to refresh and expand our creative experience with music (of any kind). It is based on many years of coaching and leading workshops. I found the MM approach to be uniquely effective with players and listeners alike to quickly reachnew plateaus of joyful satisfaction , transcending all notions of routine and criticism. Yes, music is a life-long practice, and we continue to grow in our abilities. But we don't have to wait to enjoy every minute with it right now. We all have more musical talent than we’ll ever realize in one lifetime. All there is to know about music we can hear and feel. And all we can hear and feel we can play.

But "Music Mind" is more than that. It is grounded in the belief that "life = music" is not just a metaphor.
The musical principals of rhythm and sound govern all life and all actions. And the rhythms are constantly changing. There is actually no routine at all, even if it looks and feels like that at times. We all are improvisers. We all came into this world as spontaneously creative beings. To be creative is our nature.
"Music Mind" gives us the tools to connect with our natural, spontaneous, creative mind, over and over.

The book is scheduled scheduled for release in 2019, including corresponding web-pages.

You might know me from my performance/recording work with improvisers like Don Cherry, who brought me here from Europe and introduced me and my companion, the vocalist/poet Ingrid Sertso, to Ornette Coleman, in my mind one of the most influential musicians of our time. Or you might know me from the now legendary Creative Music Studio, that Ingrid and I started with Ornette in the 70s and which is florishing again in a second wave of workshop/performance activities ( www.creativemusic.org). Or you might know me from recordings on many labels, including present piano trilogy on John Zorn's Tzadik label.

This book is about how we are connecting with the flow that is the natural state of mind we are born with; how we develop skills to stay tuned to the flow of music; and about the uniqueness of our creative minds that we’ll discover in the process.

I remember driving in New York City with Ornette Coleman and Ingrid Sertso. It must have been some time in the nineties. A yellow taxi in front of us had a bumper sticker that said: “I won’t blow my horn if you don’t blow yours”. Ornette said: “That could be the title of my next album”. And he continued: “I wish I could write a book where the readers would say: ‘If it is that easy I will get an instrument and play too’ ”. Ornette was a deep thinker and probably the major influence in developing the concept of Music Mind, which is grounded in the experience that everyone is musical.
Ornette was a master of intuitive improvisation and composition, laying the groundwork for an approach to music making that was not cerebral at all, not based on theory but on trusting your intuition.

That is exactly what Music Mind is about.

The promise of Music Mind is

- to lead us to the natural flow of our naturally creative minds, again and again
- to develop confidence in the uniqueness of our own ways of action, expression and communication
- to develop trust in our intuition and feeling
- to expand our musical horizons

The writing of Music Mind is in progress, to be completed in the 2018/19 season.. Most chapters and the outline are written. Web pages with music, videos and webinars will complement the written text. I am fortunate to have a great team of a writer, editor and copy-editor to work with.  So, with your help we can get it all finished and out into the world. We got this campaign launched at

https://www.gofundme.com/music-mind

This campaign comes with one-of-a-kind rewards, not available anywhere else:

We are constantly recording in our own studio and beyond. And I have several unreleased and out-of-print recordings that I consider of great value, featuring among others bassist David Holland, drummer Ed Blackwell, the KB Orchestra, the amazing "Operazone", produced by Bill Laswell and others, that I will be glad to see copied, signed and dedicated to you, as a token of my appreciation for your support of the Music Mind book. And, of course, the book itself.

You’ll find all the details of the “Music Mind” campaign at:
