MURSD Spanish Exchange Program

We need your help to send two students on an exploratory trip to San Sebastián, Spain in September 2017, with the goal of setting up a two way student exchange program in the MURSD! 100% of the proceeds from this campagin will be used to directly fund travel expenses for our two student ambassadors.
What better way to teach global awareness than to give students opportunities to travel overseas? MURSD is a leader in world language offerings and opportunities, but we have yet to provide a two way exchange program for our high school students. We are finally close to implementing such an exchange program with Spain and we need your help! This year the Memorial and Clough Spanish Immersion students have built a connection with a school in San Sebastián, Spain. Through weekly Skype chats and video exchanges elementary students have built relationships while engaging in authentic language practice. MURSD students model their native English skills, and hear peers speaking castellano (Spanish). Since this connection has been such an enriching experience, we are working to enhance the virtual exchange to become an actual exchange program for our students at the high school. As part of the district’s strategic plan we have set the goal to expand world language programs. For the past three years The Spanish Immersion Advisory Board has been researching exchange programs for high school students and we believe San Sebastián could be a good fit for Mendon-Upton. San Sebastián is a small city on the North coast of Spain in the Basque Country and last year it was awarded the European Culture Capital. They are equally excited to work with us and the first step to a quality exchange program is a reconnaissance trip to meet the staff and explore the city. Upon a successful visit to the city and school and a reciprocal trip by the Santa Teresa staff here, implementation of the exchange is planned to take place during the 2018-2019 school year.
