Hi, my name is Greg Farley and I am an electronic music producer of 12 years, a student, and a stay-at-home parent. Dropping out of high school and multiple periods of homelessness in my adolescence hampered my desire to pursue higher education, which encouraged me to find other ways to express myself in a creative manner. As an electronic music producer, I have been fortunate to frequently tour internationally, broadening my perspective through connections with people from varied backgrounds. The knowledge I have acquired in the pursuit of developing my craft has helped me develop a better understanding of the music production process, and has inspired me to assist others in their own musical creations.
In 2012, I began a long road toward getting my education 15 years after dropping out of high school. 2013 brought the birth of our son Quentin, and I have provided care for him while attending courses at community college since his birth. In 2014 I completed my GED, and obtained my Associate’s Degree in Music Technology in 2015. I have been accepted into San Diego State University’s Recording Technology and Audio Design program and am on the waiting list for University of California San Diego’s ICAM program for Fall 2016.
My ultimate goal is to obtain a Master’s Degree in Electronic Music Composition to be able to instruct others in aspects of music production and composition in a formal setting that allows them to freely express themselves and find the personal freedom that I find when I am creating sounds and music. Continuing my education is the best way for me to be able to be able to provide for my family and refine my own abilities while learning how to instruct others. This has allowed me to complete my Associate’s Degree in Music Technology and I am now beginning the Bachelor’s Degree portion of my quest.
In 2015, we were victims of the housing crunch and were evicted from our affordable place, which forced us to stay with family until finding another place for our family. This upheaval caused significant challenges for us that we are now just barely recovering from. The area we moved to is not the ideal environment that I would like to raise my child around, and has pushed my drive to go towards my Bachelor’s Degree away from the area we are currently living in.
While I am able to get financial assistance that will cover my tuition at San Diego State, I will still need to move my family of 3 from where we live in Richmond, California to San Diego. As a family with a toddler, the move will be expensive and we will need to find reasonable housing as well in San Diego, which also requires a high upfront cost. We will have a little money saved by the time we wish to leave in August, however it will not be enough to afford the 500-mile move as well as pay the initial costs of renting an apartment. Some apartments require as much as 3x the monthly rent to move in, which would be incredibly difficult to do while already on a tight budget. We need help with the moving expenses and the initial costs of renting an apartment.
This is why I am asking for your help with these expenses. I have been fortunate to have some amazing support from my partner and friends, and appreciate everyone that has helped me get this far. This is one of the most challenging things I have done and it is the beginning of a brand new chapter in my life, and I hope that you will be able to help me facilitate this change. I would like to have most of the funds before July 23, 2016 however I will keep the campaign open through August if we have not met our goal yet.
Any donations are welcome, regardless of amount; however, I have also provided some gifts for those who are interested in providing a specific contribution and would like a particular token of appreciation.
Many of the gifts are digital downloads of my released music and some unreleased music, and will be sent out before the end of August. The gifts that are physical items will be mailed out by October and any production videos, lessons or track critiques will be completed by the end of the year. All other gift deliveries will be arranged between the recipients and myself. For gifts that require travel, if you are within a couple hours radius to where I live, then I can travel to you; any further travel must be arranged for me.
