Mt. Lassen Theatre Accessibility

“The theatre is the only institution in the world that has been dying for 4000 years and has never succumbed. It requires tough and devoted people to keep it alive.”

John Steinbach

Dear Theatre Friends and Neighbors,

I am excited to share renovation progress at Mt. Lassen Theatre, formerly Chester Theatre,  and share a need.  After receiving overwhelming support from 65 Theatre Founders we were able to pay for the manufacture of our new marquee and blade.  Production begins this month!  We will be able to watch our signage take shape through web cams at Alpha Architectural in Sacramento this winter- our new winter sport!

We caught another vision as we collaborated with engineer Jim MacIntyre and general contractor, Brett Womack. Although we are not required to do so at this time, we would like to make the line of travel to our entry safer and more accessible for the disabled and elderly.

This will be accomplished by creating handicap parking, a new drainage system, improve the steep grade from the street to the doors, two double doors on each side of the ticket booth with push button entry and raising the current foyer floor and ceiling.

Additional entrance improvements will cost roughly $40,000, but this amount will be applied to meet future American’s with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance requirements.  Again, accessibility accommodations are not required yet, but will be a credit to us in future phases of the remodel.

The “MLT Entrance and Accessibility Expansion- 30-Day Holiday GoFundMe” asks our community and theatre friends far and wide if they will help us meet these additional needs with year-end, 2016 tax-deductible giving during the holidays.

Will you join us in donating any amount this Christmas season to make the theatre more accessible? For those who give $500 or more, you will be offered an engraved brick to be inlaid in the Art Deco Entry Terrazzo.

Your brick purchase and donations will help us raise the $40k needed to:
·      Add handicap parking
·      Improve winter drainage
·      Raise the original ceiling and entry floor to accommodate larger doors
·      Create an Art Deco Terrazzo inlaid with engraved donor bricks
·      ADA compliant double doors on each side of the ticket booth
·      Push Button accessibility
·      Improve the grade between the street and entryway

On behalf of the Mt. Lassen Theatre Committee, we can’t thank you enough for all your grit and devotion in ushering the Theatre, a place for visual and performing arts, into the Lake Almanor Basin.

Respectfully,

Gwen Meinhardt
