Ms. Lucy's Memorial Fund

Donation protected
In honor of Ms. Lucy's memory,  we created a go fund me account to set up an interactive children's garden and bench at the Montessori School in Orangevale, California.   Lucy was a teacher/environmental educator and helped to develop the environmental education program at the school. We are considering the following items;

1.  bench with a plaque
2.  rock garden for children to write on rocks and place them in the "rock river"
3.  sand area with stones embedded in concrete that the children can "dig" and learn about fossils
4.  plant and animal bone imprints created with concrete slabs suitable for children to create etching
5.  native plant garden with plant information and uses for children to discover and learn.

Lucy Murr was born on November 15, 1957 in Columbus, Ohio and died May 6, 2019 (her father's birthday) in Orangevale, California.  She was the fifth child in a family of eight, four older brothers and one younger sister. As a child, she was tight with her little sister (whom she loved to boss) and her friend Nancy B.  Together the three friends spent hours combing through Nancy B's backyard forest in the suburbs of Pittsburgh Pennsylvania, digging in dirt for interesting critters, creating doll houses and collecting acorn tops which became dishes, collecting lightning bugs in jars at night where they played "capture the flag" at sunset on Nancy B's grassy lawn, and burying dead creatures they found on the back alley of Lucy's family's large stone house on Washington Road.  Her's was a childhood full of play, imagination, and discovery. Hours and hours were spent outdoors during the hot summer months, running around with the neighborhood children until the skyline became too dark to see. During cherry season, they would occasionally find themselves in trouble as they climbed the neighbor's tree to collect juicy, tangy red cherries.

Some autumn months brought the cicada, with the sound of their loud chirping music. During these times, Lucy and her friends would pick up the skins that the insects left behind and attach them to their clothing and hair, amused and in awe of the swarming bugs and how they clung to their clothing.  It was like finding treasure, searching the tree branches and leaves to find the crunchy, casts of insect skins they left behind.

These were the memories that Lucy treasured and wanted so badly to share with the children with whom she worked.  Her adult life was spent investigating, discovering and learning about plants and animals and their native habitat.  She studied biology and environmental science in her college years, and worked at national and state parks all over the United States, including;  Oregon Caves National Monument, Cave Junction, OR, Crater Lake National Park, Klamath County, OR, Olympic National Park,  Olympic Peninsula, WA,  Blue Hills Reservation, Milton, MA, Otter Lake Conservation School, Greenfield, NH,  Mount San Jacinto State Park, Idyllwild, CA and many other environmental education programs.

Please join us in supporting a project that carries on Ms. Lucy's legacy, and her love for hands-on environmental education for the next generation of children.
