Free Outdoor Community Movie Nights

I'm Robert Scott, owner of Comickaze Comics Books and more in San Diego (Clairemont and Point Loma) and for the last 24 years we have continually looked for ways to bring our community together to celebrate the arts.

In September of 2015 we opened our second location in the Liberty Station Arts and Culture District in Point Loma and were blessed with a phenomenal space to hold community events.  So far we have hosted two free community events,  Batman Day and a Halloween event with our neighbors IDW Publishing and the San Diego Comic Art Gallery as well as five free artist/author signings and hosted an exhibition of comics created by eleventh graders from neighboring High Tech High.  This May will mark our 15th Annual Free Comic book Day (our first in Liberty Station) where we give out thousands of free comicsin celebration of the art form and are about to begin a literacy program for children to encourage a love of reading.

Now we want to take it up a notch and start hosting bi-weekly Family Movie Nights.

Liberty Station is housed in the former Naval Training Center in Point Loma and is San Diego’s flagship civic, arts, and culture district and is also home to hundreds of military families, High Tech High School and Elementary School.

I want to create a free ongoing program that brings this community together in celebration of the arts and family.

My immediate goal is to generate funding to support six outdoor screening events, with the hope that attendees and sponsors will support ongoing programming.

We'll have fixed costs of ~$1000 for screen rental and sound equpment and $300-500 for licensing to show each movie in public (remember those FBI warnings at the beginning of videos?), which is dependent on age and popularity of the movie.

There will also be additional expenses for use of the space, insurance, cleanup and possibly security.

My goal is to schedule these events beginning in March so I would need fundsby the end of February to reserve equipment and space.

Having dedicated the last 24 years of my professional life to introducing and fostering a love of reading as well as creating and helping others to create stories and art for others to enjoy, it would be a huge thrill to be able to share my love of film with the community and i truly hope that you will be part of this effort too!
