She just had her 13th birthday and was doing well. She came down with a urinary tract infection about a month ago. Antibiotics seemed to help but her symptoms came back soon after being off her medication. We did more testing and found that she has an e. Colli infection, which isn't that uncommon in dogs so we treated with a different medication.
In the meantime, she seemingly overnight went deaf in her left ear. Her world also seems to be mirror imaged as she's been getting lost and going the wrong way.
I brought her in to her regular veterinarian who didn't see any obvious signs of vestibular or ear infection. A few days later I decided to take her to her neurologist. After examination, she is worried about a brain tumor.
I'm crushed.
MRI would confirm, and a lot more testing would be needed to see if this is benign or not. Luckily a more common brain tumor is a benign one. We worry about the growth of the mass and it eventually causing more neurological issues including seizures. And seizures in themselves are rough, but add to it a dog with disk disease.
Testing was recommended to recheck her general values and urine, as well as toxoplasmosis and cryptococcus so it would be safe to start steroids if need be for her tumor. So far toxo is negative, but her urine came back with e. colli again and her kidneys are showing signs of distress. A heavy duty antibiotic was started and ultrasound recommended from there to check her kidneys further as well as look for any other concerns. Luckily the ultrasound was pretty benign, angry bladder wall (to be expected) but kidneys looked okay and no lumps were found. Probably fine and unrelated, a full and large gallbladder was found. Now just to be safe, she's on a medication to help with that. Radiologist would like to recheck an ultrasound in a month.
Molly as of today is a little subdued, not eating as well and still straining when urinating. But overall is trying to be in good spirits, as am I - but I'm a wreck.
Molly's time depends on the growth rate of the mass, if it's benign or malignant, and the health of her kidneys. So it's a big unknown unfortunately.
My goals for Molly is just to keep her comfortable and happy, and do what I can to help her get over her bladder/kidney infection as well as try medications/supplements and diet to help slow the growth of the potential mass. As much as I would like the confirmation of a tumor, the MRI is not cheap and our outcome would be the same as I can't put Molly through a surgery or radiation. It's not easy on them, it's thousands of dollars, and quality and quantity of life is not much more than having them on steroids and TLC. But the testing and the medications are killing me financially and so here is where I ask for some help. I'm doing this all on my own and it's surely not easy.
Any little bit will help tremendously. Molly is my life, my heart dog and I want what's best for her. I want to keep her comfortable and happy and get as much time as I can with her. Hopefully I can take her to her favorite place ever this spring - the Great Sand Dunes in southern Colorado. Hopefully she can have a Molly day party at her shop Wagz and Instagram live it just to thank everyone for all the love, pets and treats. Most importantly, I just want my little lady to know that she is, and always will be, the best.dog.ever. ❤️
Any donations will go straight to Molly's care, and anything exceeding will go into New Hope Cattledog Rescue where our life together began, with me picking her up from death row at a shelter. She was only to be my foster. But 13 years later, here we are. And I wouldn't change anything.
