Venezuela, a country located in the northern part of South America, is known for its natural resources and beautiful landmarks. However, today it is living through the worst socio-political crisis of its history. Due to the high levels of inflation, there is a serious shortage of basic necessities such as food and medicine. Crime rates have risen to make Venezuela one of the most dangerous countries in the world. Because of this, Venezuelan citizens are subjected to a life of fear and poverty.
Vargas is one of the 23 states of Venezuela, located in the northern part of the country. In 1999, a mudslide, often called the "Vargas Tragedy", destroyed the infrastructure of the city, along with 30,000 lives. Seventeen years later, the effects of this tragedy are still evident because of the incompetence of the government in reconstruction. The citizens of Vargas directly suffer from poverty, lack of education, and shortage of food, water, and medications.
MoviVargas is an organization founded by college students in Vargas that have decided to come together to make a difference. Our goal is to be a source of hope and a helping hand to those who need it most during the difficult times our country is faced with. In 2016, we created and participated in over 30 volunteer activites in local poverty-stricken areas, orphanages, nursing homes, public hospitals, etc. In December, we created an activity called the "Juguetazo", where we distributed 300 toys and supplies to three local neighborhoods, four orphanages and one children's hospital in Vargas. Our motivation for our work comes from our desire to do more through the joy of giving, rather than receiving.
To keep our organization running, we are asking for $1000 USD in order to continue our work this year. With the current economic situation in Venezuela, it is very expensive to purchase the materials we need for our events. For example, for the activites in hopitals, we need to be able to purchase diapers, baby bottles, milk, clothes, etc. For activites in orphanages, we need food and school supplies. Any donation would be helpful as it would make our goals for this year more attainable. With your contribution, we can advance towards our mission of making a difference in our local communities and ultimately, in our country.
