As you may be aware, the UK immunisation schedule up until now, only vaccinated adolescent girls against HPV, the human papilloma virus. Boys in the UK were not vaccinated despite strong health risks to do so as in other countries such as America and Australia- HPV is the cause of 5 % of all cancers worldwide and is overtaking smoking as a risk factor for mouth cancer. Mouth cancer kills more people a year than testicular and cervical cancer combined.

The Joint Committee of Vaccination and Immunisation JSCVI have now decided to offer an NHS funded programme the HPV vaccine to all boys in year 8  at the same time the girls are offered the vaccine. Such great news and a very successful public health u-turn after years of campaigning and driving awareness headed by HPV Action,  a collaborative partnership of 50 patient and professional organisations that advocates HPV vaccination for both boys and girls.of which the Oral Health Foundation and British Society of Dental Hygiene and Therapy belong.

This does, however, mean that 1 million of our boys will not be offered the same catch-up opportunity as the girls were  and will remain at risk.
It seems that all is not lost, some schools are offering it for a private fee, as will the doctor's surgeries.. seems they are already cashing in!

Under 15s  require 2 doses-  £325 in total
Over 15s 3 doses-  £480 in total

 Sons, brothers , nephews, grandsons

If your son is gay, he can walk into a sexual health clinic at 16 or above and declare his sexuality and receive it for free.

Your daughter can at any age walk into a sexual health clinic and will be offered it opportunistically. Does not seem fair especially since this is a cancer-preventing drug and boys/men have a higher risk to mouth cancer, three times.. Not exactly equality or matching human rights.
I apologise if this is a difficult subject to think about but it is cancer preventing. This is a virus that 80% 0f the population will have at some . In terms of cost it costs the government £56 million pounds a year to treat genital warts one of the strains of this virus and it will wipe them out to so how can it be justified to charge so much for a private vaccine or not at least offer this to all remaining under 16 boys at school.

So we continue to raise awareness and enlist your support with our Moveit4smiles initiative which sits within the Oral Health Foundation for Mouth Cancer Action. All monies go to continuing raising awareness within the profession and the public .

The best way to protect your child from HPV is for them to have the vaccine.
More information about HPV is available on the NHS website.
Moveit4smiles If you would like more information on the vaccine, and why it’s so important for your child to have it, please visitwww.jabsfortheboys.uk.

Alternatively, you can speak to us or your dental professional  about the vaccination at any point, including at your next appointment.
