Broken & Burned...but Not Beaten!
An Albuquerque woman is one broken bone, & a slightly charred motorcycle, away from from making history again! DJ Jones (aka Momma D) was injured while trying to save her motorcycles from an enormous fire at the Villa Apartments on March 17th. The blaze destroyed/damaged over 50 vehicles parked under a carport! DJ pulled one of her bikes to safety & ran back into the blaze for the other. With exploding gas tanks & blazing tires all around, APD ordered her to vacate the area, leaving her beloved & history making BLKEIC (Black Ice) behind! Somehow it survived the fire, & she is determined to finish what she started...again. You see, DJ made history in 2006 by becoming the first person to ride her motorcycle Big Bertha, through all 50 states on consecutive days. At the time of the fire, she was days away from doing it again.
DJ was preparing to ride to CA, & ship the bike to Hawaii, to complete her most recent 50 state solo ride on Black Ice when the fire changed her plans. Hitting these problems would make most people stop...but DJ is unfazed, & as enthusiastic as ever about completing her ride in Hawaii. Once it's done, she plans to ride her bike from CA, to the National Motorcycle Museum in Anamosa Iowa, to have it enshrined alongside her original bike, Big Bertha.
DJ has already paid for the trip to Hawaii, & will head out as soon as her broken foot heals up enough to ride. Her friends, fans & admirers in NM are pitching in to help with the shipping costs of her new bike. She will ride BLKEIC into the museum, with 150,000 miles on it, then ride her new bike Thunder, home to NM. You won't be surprised to learn that she calls herself Iron Butt!
