More than a film, Mother’s Milk: A Film Quilt is an Immersive Experience and example of what good can be made out of negative circumstances when a community agrees to rise.

We are raising funds to finish the coloring and sound on the actual film. As well as making sure we have the space, time, and resources to develop the immersive experience.

Mother’s Milk: A Film Quilt
Written & Created by Larry Powell
Immersive Experience by: Spencer Williams

Mother’s Milk: A Film Quilt is a response piece that speaks to our troubling times of oppression and injustice. Its aim is to help the world to understand why violence doesn’t work and why worthiness and self love does.

Adding to the international tradition of community folk art, this piece stands on the shoulders of great works like the AIDS Memorial Quilt and the murals that inspire the hope and endurance of a community in crisis. It is a radical reinvention of media that creatively addresses the social issues of today.

Mother’s Milk is a series of shorts, stitched together in a visual album to tell a black boy named Sparrow’s story of meeting his mother and finding his way home. But the magic doesn’t stop on screen: You, our audience, are also invited to step into the role of Sparrow, becoming “#iamsparrow”, in a living, immersive experience.

Imagine yourself walking into a meat locker of hoodies, taking one, putting it on and embarking on this great journey with on-screen Sparrow as he thirsts for his mother and true home.

This multi-platform, immersive piece is both new media and a live production. It is a living gallery of multiple projection screens, speakers and more. It’s a museum exhibit that comes to life, literally bringing the audience on our main character’s journey together.

This wild, non-linear story itself confronts themes and topics of abuse, bullying, depression, forgiveness, brotherhood, sisterhood, parenthood, self-respect, gun violence, police brutality, displacement of self, homelessness, racism, body image, consent, cat-calling, the power of knowing your history and more... head-on.

In the end, Mother’s Milk: A Film Quilt hopes to empower community members with tools to make their own film quilts, ultimately adding to a larger quilted conversation.

Hi GoFundme Supporters!

I’m reaching out to invite all of you who may be in town and whoever else you may wish to bring/encourage folk to come to the Friends & Family Screening Party for Mother’s Milk in New York City on Monday, August 6th, 2018 at 730pm!

I continue to be wow’d at where this film project lands. The Screening and Party will be at The Pershing Square Signature Center on 42nd street. I watched this place be built from the ground up and would stand my cold butt out on the street in the winter to and from where I was staying at the time and say, “I’m gonna have a play there one day!” Cut to the Theatre Center actually opening its doors and me finishing up drafts of the play version of Mother’s Milk, in The Signature Theatre Café.

Dreams are valid and, while people, places, and things try and knock you down when you have community like we do it strengthens the bounce back.

Here’s the link to the Eventbrite for the Screening Party RSVP HERE:

This night will help us spark up a new round of support (in order to reach or new goal) as we make our way to the MLK DAY 2019 Immersive Film Installment which we’ll tell you more about SOON!

All Love,
Larry Powell

Dear Mother’s Milk Family,

Thank you for supporting and helping to produce my film project, Mother’s Milk: A Film Quilt. It is powerful, it is beautiful, and has a uncanny habit of making friends/fans in high places at private viewings enabling it to win big meetings and opportunities to fly.

With that, we have some unexpected costs (festival fees & further post production costs) that have come up and we’re asking around for a little extra immediate help to get the project extra ready to shine at its best.

Our goal is only $3,000 by the end of the week to get us started. Hope you can help us reach that goal. So if you have a little more of that initial giving spirit from earlier in the year to spare, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for any and all support you’ve already given. As always, a share, a prayer, and even a word of encouragement goes a long way.

Here’s a link to the film just for you - private. Please don’t share. But so that you see what greatness you have added to. Look at the ART for CHANGE that has been made.
