Bring authentic Montessori to SWVA!

Moonflower Montessori School is seeking $15,000 to purchase additional materials to finish outfitting our two inaugural classrooms (primary/preschool: 3-6 yrs. and elementary: 6-12 yrs.) this fall.

The Montessori materials are truly the shining stars of the Montessori classrooms. From practical life materials that teach self-care and care of the classroom environment to academic materials that allow elementary children to explore language, math, history, geography and the sciences, the Montessori materials are designed to allow independent exploration of complex concepts. The materials are carefully designed to match what we understand about children’s development, the concepts included often surpass the content typically expected of elementary children including those typically not taught until high school such as algebra, geometry, chemistry and physics. High-quality, beautiful materials entice the child to explore challenging concepts in ways that reflect specific qualities of the children’s growth and interests.

We are committed to making authentic Montessori education financially accessible to familes in southern Appalachia. To maintain our low tuition rates, we need your help to outfit our classrooms.

We are a community of artists, farmers, entrepreneurs, and professionals who are personally invested in the Montessori method. Moonflower Montessori School is designed to support children and their families, inside and outside of school.

We believe the children of southwest Virginia and northeast Tennessee deserve access to high quality, progressive, eductional opportunities . Moonflower Montessori School will provide the highest standards of excellence in education in a nurturing environment that empowers students to find their unique place in the world and acheive their true purpose.

The mission of Moonflower Montessori School is to offer authentic Montessori primary and elementary programs that meet the unique strengths and challenges of each child.  Moonflower teachers, parents, board members and volunteers will work together to provide the children with an atmosphere of support that allows for genuine learning. We are aligned with the principles of and currently working toward certification as a Wildflower School . Wildflower is an innovative approach to Montessori education started at the MIT Media Lab.

We are committed to the Wildflower model and its Nine Principles . We hope that the success of our initial project will inspire the initiation of more Wildflower Montessori micro-schools in southwest Virginia.  One unique strength of the Wildflower Model is the ability for each classroom to adapt its structure and objectives to the unique needs of the children, families, and teachers it serves. We hope to inspire our community to identify needs and to create nurturing environments to meet those needs.

"The core values of Wildflower are connectedness and growth. We believe that the former is a prerequisite for the latter, so we pay special attention to connectedness: connectedness to oneself (self-awareness),  connectedness to one another (empathy), and connectedness of various facets of oneself and the environment (wholeness).  We believe that in an environment of connectedness -- of self-awareness, empathy, and wholeness -- extraordinary growth naturally occurs. Further, we believe that connectedness doesn’t come by accident, but rather by practices that foster it."  www.wildflowerschools.org
