UPDATE 10/18 9:00pm: Monty is home and resting easy. He has a good appetite and we are staying on top of cold packs for his incision. AMAZING NEWS the surgery cost when we check out today was only $6200 instead of the high end estimate of $8500. Thank you to everyone who has helped. When Monty wakes up from his nap I will read him all the people who have helped him this far. He will be so happy to hear about his friends.

UPDATE 10/18 1:56pm : The surgery went well and there were no signs of other lesions. The tumor was smaller which is not good because typically the larger tumors are benign and the smaller are malignant. But that’s not always the case and only the biopsy will show the true results so we hope for the best.

Monty is finally eating some meatballs for the doctors and he will most likely be able to come home tonight. Now we wait for the results.

Written 10/17: writing from the waiting room while we wait for surgery

My goodest boy Monty fell sick rapidly this week with what we thought was stomach bloating. Monday night seemed uncomfortable, Tuesday morning refused to eat, Tuesday night seemed very
bloated with no appetite, Wednesday morning extremely bloated. We brought him in to the Rohnert Park VCA where they revealed his bloating is actually his abdomen filling with blood.

Monty had tumor on his spleen which had ruptured and caused the internal bleeding. The only option was surgery to completely remove both the spleen and tumor to then biopsy. If benign, he will live a happy but spleen-less life. If cancerous (Hemangiosarcoma), which is a 60% chance, it is a very aggressive cancer and the operation will only have given him a few more months to live. But I can promise they will be the best, most precious months of his life.

These tumors in dogs apparently often go unnoticed until a rupture occurs. These good boys are totally fine one day and terrible the next. It is absolutely heartbreaking.

The surgery is very expensive- estimated $8500 without complications. Any complications will add to the cost. The total amount is due the point of discharge which will hopefully be tomorrow if things go well. I told them to do whatever it takes, knowing I don’t have the money but am praying I figure it out before he leaves.

If he has ever brought a smile to your face please help me to pay for his surgery. He’s my best friend. Literally anything will help.
