Molly’s Breast Cancer Fight

This past July, my mom was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer and has been receiving treatment from St. Joseph’s Hospital in New Jersey.
Over the summer, my mom had many doctor appointments and testing done in order to finalize which surgery she would ultimately receive. My mom and her team of doctors eventually decided on the lobectomy, which would remove the tumor, surrounding cells and some lymph nodes. This was decided as the best course of action to prevent further complications as she is also a type 1 diabetic.
On September 18th she had surgery at St. Joseph’s and the procedure went well. The surgeon removed the tumor entirely as well as three lymph nodes. She and her doctors initially planned for radiation to be the next and final step after surgery. But after genetic testing of the tumor, her team of doctors determined she would need an aggressive course of treatment of chemotherapy over the next 24 weeks prior to the planned radiation.
As she begins the strenuous process of chemotherapy tomorrow, we are posting this GoFundMe to raise money for her many medical expenses. Unfortunately, our insurance policy does not cover many of the necessary medications like Neupogen injections. These costly injections are administered after chemotherapy to increase her white blood cell count, which reduces the side effects. They also work to boost her immune system to fight off infection. In addition, an important medication, Zofran, is not covered either. It is used to prevent the extreme nausea commonly associated with chemotherapy. As a type 1 diabetic, these medications also affect her blood sugars significantly. Therefore, it is increasingly important my mom gets the best medication available.
As my sister Cassie attends Florida Southern in Lakeland, FL and my brother Jack attends Saint Joseph’s Regional High School in Montvale, NJ and I attend Salve Regina in Newport, RI, these times are even more difficult. Cassie and I wish more than anything we could be home with our mom and family throughout this extremely tough process, but we know she is in great hands with my surrounding family members and her wonderful friends.
We truly appreciate anything that can be contributed, even thoughts and prayers for my mom during this emotional time.
