My name is David I work as a first responder and live with my wife Amber and two of our girls ages 15 and 9 in Glendale Arizona. I make a decent living and work hard to provide for my family so asking for financial help is difficult for me. My wife Amber is a stay at home mom and takes care of the family and home.
Due to prior health issues Amber's immune system has been greatly compromised. We moved into our home almost two years ago. After moving into the home at the end of 2016 Amber's health began to deteriorate. She was hospitalized on two different occasions for over four weeks. Including having a piece of her kidney removed due to cancer. She further developed other unexplained health issues. Amber started getting hives, joint pain, swelling, and developed several cases of bronchitis causing continuous shortness of breath. She has been unable to get good sleep causing extreme fatigue. Amber has had to deal with extreme pain that effected her day to day activities. Amber has seen several doctors including specialists without any diagnosis. Even the Mayo Clinic doctors were stumped.
I developed some sort of eye condition that causes constant blinking that again doctors did not have an answer for. My sleep has also been effected causing fatigue at times. Our 15 year old daughter has developed bad headaches and nose bleeds. Our 9 year old has also developed extreme headaches. She has undergone MRI testing and seen a Neurologist again without any answers. Also our two cats began throwing up on a regular basis, which was unusual for them.
We recently discovered we had a water leak from our air conditioning condensation line. The water leaked into the hall bathroom and caused the ceiling to collapse. Upon further investigation it was discovered the leak has probably been there since the AC unit was put on the house in 2015 (prior to us moving in). We discovered we had mold due to the water leak. Once the mold was discovered Amber did a lot of research into the effects of mold on people and pets. The symptoms the family is struggling with had a clear correlation with the effects of toxic mold growing in a home. Due to the possible health risks we decided to have a professional company conduct a mold test in our home.
The mold inspection cost us ($450) and the inspection revealed high levels of stachybotrys (toxic mold) in our home. The mold report concluded we needed to have the mold re-mediated immediately for the health of our family. We got an estimate for mold remediation. The cost for complete remediation is over ($3800). The cost for remediation could rise once they cut into the wall. If the mold has grown further than expected the remediation cost will go up. After the remediation is done we then have to have a final air quality test to determine if the house is safe for occupancy. The cost to have both tests and the remediation is almost $5000 . Our family and pets will also be displaced from our home for three days while they do the remediation.
The final cost to repair both bathrooms is unknown at this time. The wall the mold is on is a common wall between both of our bathrooms which requires them to remove everything off of the walls on both sides of the bathroom. This includes, drywall, vanities, mirrors, lights etc. We have tile top vanities which cannot just be removed and replaced when the work is done so the cost to repair everything will be higher than normal.
What makes this even more of a hardship is the fact we recently had to spend several thousand dollars in court fees pertaining to reunification of our youngest daughter with her biological father who had previously been absent. We also had to cancel a planned family vacation to Disneyland in November due to the growing financial burden.
Under normal circumstance I would never ask for donations, but due to all the recently incurred cost it has left us in a place of immediate need. The remediation of our home needs to be completed as soon as possible for the health of our family especially my wife.
