Mohawks for Mikey Danger!

Donation protected
Bryce and I will shave our heads into Mohawks if we can raise $8,000 for our son Mikey 'Danger'!

A quick recap - Mikey Danger has a rare neurological condition called HHE Syndrome. He was diagnosed at 1 years old and now at nearly 6years of age, he's about to face his biggest challenge yet.

After years of medication, seizures and hours and hours of therapy, we have come full circle in moving forward with a treatment to stop the seizures. It is a brain surgery called - Hemispherectomy.

Hemispherectomy is a very rare neurosurgical procedure in which one cerebral hemisphere (half of the brain) is removed, disconnected, or disabled.

This is a life changing operation
for Mikey and we want to give him the best chance to recover in every possible way. Our public health system is giving Michael a great chance at his future, however the recovery is limited and we need to delve further into accessing the right treatments for Mikey to enable his best recovery for his sunny future.

Mikey D will have one hemisphere disconnected, effectively 'switching it off' from the rest of his body, which will hopefully give him a life seizure free.  This will also enable his healthy hemisphere, a chance at functioning at its best, without being interrupted all the time from the seizures.

Mikey has been living with a hemiplegia (weakness on one side of his body for many years) however, following the procedure, he will become weaker at first.  He will need intense rehab therapy to get him back to where he was, just before the surgery.

Ongoing rehab will be a part of his life for many years and will involve the following:-

-Speech therapy including AAC device - (Augmentative Alternative Communication)
-Occupational Therapy to help him become more independent, dressing, showering, going to the bathroom
-Physio - building his strength so he can maintain his balance and participate in his favourite activities which include - horse riding, running, dancing, soccer, climbing and even riding a bike!
- Riding for the Disabled Horse Riding - weekly lessons - amazing therapy that helps Mikey in so many ways
- Therapy suits not yet available in Australia that may say goodbye to wearing his AFO's (leg splints) and an upper limb therapy suit (instead of an arm/hand splint)
- Mainstream and alternativec therapies, specialists, hospitals and anything else we can uncover to assist with Mikey's recovery in line with what we have done up until now.

Thank you so much everyone for your support!  Whether you donate, share or just read our story - thank you for supporting us :)
