Help Miatta get to Paris!

I am so incredibly honored to announce that I have been selected for the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council’s Paris Residency program at the Cité internationale des arts, sponsored by Mairie de Paris/Mayor’s Office of the City of Paris, France! Residencies have been so critical in allowing me the time, space, and resources to create new bodies of work, and this is an amazing opportunity to join a vibrant community of artists and focus on the creation of new work while being inspired by the rich artistic landscape of Paris. I will be thinking through issues of migration and diaspora, specifically as experienced by Afro-descendent Parisians, and engaging questions of access and cultural valuation. I will explore this through on-the-ground research and the creation of new work in poetics, photography, drawing, sound/video, and sculptural installation.

I am humbly requesting your support to help me cover the cost of airfare & insurance to participate in this program, which will run from January - June 2018 - so soon! I am urgently trying to raise funds before December 1st. In the face of systemic inequalities, I have been working so hard to cultivate my practice and I hope you will consider supporting me in this!

Through my multidisciplinary art practice, I aim to create spaces of contemplation and affirmation to elevate alternative ways of being and seeing, of crucial importance in shifting the balances in this upside-down world. Your support will enable me to continue this work by alleviating financial stresses so I can take full advantage of this incredible opportunity. I am also an arts educator and community teaching artist, and this experience will enrich the toolkit I bring to my pedagogical practice as well.
