Highbridge Charlie

Denise Lauffer   NEW YORK, NY
This is Highbridge Charlie.  He has been living in Highbridge Park, in northern Manhattan for approximately 10 years. (Highbridge Park's worst kept secret). Those who know him love him deeply, we are devoted to saving his life. He once had a family to roam Highbridge Park with, but they were all trapped years ago. Charlie was always too smart to fall for our human tricks. He was rescued 2/15/2015 around 11pm. The outside temperature was -22. He no longer has his pack, he's a slow old man now, and was not going to make it in this extreme cold. He is a handsome mutt that was never dangerous. This stoic old boy needs some help with vet bills.

We aren't sure about the extent of care needed, but no doubt, it will be alot of money. (He is looking at hip surgery, amongst other things). We put the campaign fund as $5000, but his bills could exceed that if his condition is worse than expected. He is feral and things need to go slow. Thank you in advance for caring about uptown's favorite pooch.

Hello Everyone, I have gotten many messages of concern regarding Highbridge Charlie and his limping. CHARLIE IS FINE!! I walked him before and after the video was taken.. No limp. I posted recent videos on you youtube showing that he is walking fine. My guess is his foot was asleep, hence the limping.
I have been asked to reopen the donations. I feel doing so would be fraudulent. There is no need for anymore money to take him to the vet.
This page raised $19,235,
Charlies medical bills have totaled approx. $12,000,
Go fund me takes approx. 9% totaling $1800.
The remaining balance is roughly $5400.
I have nothing to do with the "Highbridge Ricky" go fund me page. I have NO idea why that page is asking for more $$, Nor do I know where the $ collected has gone. This page has more then paid for ALL of Charlie's expenses thus far.
Please note, I'm writing this to protect myself from any lawsuit that may incur and to protect my reputation... again. smh
Thank you for your time

Highbridge Charlie rescuers and care givers Denise and Tiina have taken on a massive cat rescue:

A neighborhood cat hoarder with 30+ possibly 50 cats has passed away. The conditions of this apartment were horrendous, dead cats behind the radiators, maggots in the litter and all of the cats are emaciated with possible health issues. After her death a "friend" of the deceased woman dumped her house cats in Highbridge park, *sigh* which is notorious for its loose aggressive dogs. These cats are friendly house cats that will not survive outside, we have to act fast. Feeding and Re-rescuing this poor babies is a massive under taking. Some are unaltered young adults as well as a few kittens. I am TNR certified through the mayors alliance and can get neutering and vaccinations through this program for free, unfortunately this program does not cover vet bills, which are mounting fast, all of these cats need to be tested for a number of parasites and illnesses before they get a clean bill of health. (so far one of the cats needed to have a hernia removed) We are desperate to get foster or forever homes for these terrified cats that have already endured a horrible life. We have caught a few already, but have run out of space to house them during the vetting process. We are looking for foster homes, forever homes, food donations as well as monetary donations. Any and all help with sharing this story is greatly appreciated.

This is Highbrige Charlie and Tiina coming to visit Denise today. 7/3/15 Thank you all for making this happen. Who would have thought this outcome would have been such a success? It's been less than 24 hours since he has seen me and this is his reaction. In the beginning I was afraid he would not adapt and have to be placed in a sanctuary. I'm happy to say that's no longer a concern. Look at our beautiful boy!! Your generosity brings tears to my eyes, Thank you all!! Xoxo

I think you are correct about Charlie getting into being hand fed. Maybe you should put the bacon on top of his food and the only way he can get it is if he eats it there. I have a feeling you already tried that. I had something like that happen when I first got my boy and the vets wife told me I was being 'played' by him. When he wouldn't eat I should just pickup the food after about 5 minutes and put it in the fridge. then after awhile give it to him again. five minutes if he didn't eat I would pick it up without any emotion and put it away . finally when he wouldn't eat and I just started to walk near his food he would start to eat before I could take it away. It wasn't easy for me to do but it worked. And you can always cook for me if Charlie doesn't appreciate it. Haha. I cook for Angel too. He only doesn't eat if he is not feeling well at this point.

By the way, I feel like I have to say we've been asking for the comments from the folks running these questionable sites to be deleted from this page, because nobody impartial has been able to authenticate their claims of how the money they're raising is being spent for Charlie's welfare. It would be irresponsible to -- even indirectly -- promote traffic to their sites under the circumstances. We can't control what they do with their own audiences, but we have to protect what our goal is here. Lets keep it classy, people.

How sad. How does the expression go "No good deed goes unpunished" !. I personally feel that everyone involved is doing the best thing they feel is in the interest of the dog. And it is wonderful that we have been able to follow and contribute if we choose . Now I am seeing self appointed judges and critics that are interrogating and confrontational inserting themselves and their personal opinions and judgements. Denise is an incredible person she saved the dog started this site raised the necessary funds. Tiina is also on the front line everyday and other people are helping too. Why don't we try to encourage and support them in this effort ? Denise and the others are not on trial they are all working to take care of a wonderful dog that more than deserves their help. Obviously Charlie or Ricki Charlie is well known and well loved. Don't we all really want that in the end!?

Thanks, Blythe! I'm so glad you got the answers you were seeking. I have a lot of faith in Denise. My cats were also rescued from Highbridge Park by Denise, and she took amazing care of them, getting them healthy and ready for adoption. She spent money out of her own pocket, and even brought them to me with every supply I would ever need to take care of them. She took care of them while I was away visiting my mom in North Carolina, and refused to let me pay her, even though that's her business. She loves Charlie, and has been super hands-on with him. There are a lot of other people laying claims to him, and I'm not sure why. Maybe it's the attention, maybe it's the money, maybe they're actually just delusional -- I really don't understand it, but it's sad and weird. Denise and others pay for Charlie's food with their own money, not the funds raised here, which are purely for his medical expenses. Anyway, thanks for posting your response! It's wonderful that so many of us animal lovers are rooting for Charlie.

Alissa, thanks for the kind comment/explanation. I am a huge dog rescue advocate and did donate to Charlie/Ricky's cause. I was simply confused as to why the site was still open when they said they were closing it, as there are also two other sites collecting money for this poor guy (neither of which seem very legitimate). Nothing wrong with a healthy dose of skepticism. It is so fortunate that everyone can get together and help Denise and Tina with this dog's needs, especially given the high costs of vet care--it's a lot of money. When my sweet gentleman Edward (Labrador rescue) died last year of liver failure, I'd spent over 6K trying to cure him before he went. I was just saying that 18K is a lot of money, and was thinking of the big picture; other dogs in need. If we stuck together, imagine what we could do for other dogs, those at risk of being euthanized at high kill shelters, for example? That's something I worry about all the time. As Joanie said, one dog at a time.

It is wonderful to watch the nurturing of Charlie. Him eating bacon etc. He represents so many dogs all over the world who so need the same kind of rescuing. I only wish that these dogs also find benefactors. I guess we all do. One dog at a time. My little guy was found on the streets and caught. But he was very young, Denise in terms of white fish, I get frozen wild Alaskin Cod pieces for about 4.50 a lb at Trader Joes. It seems to be OK for his gastro issues as well as his allergies. YOu can also get the cod filets for $7 or $8 if they run out of the cod pieces. I believe there is a $1 store on W 31 St that sells the pieces for less but they don't always have them. I just stick with Trader Joes since they are consistent.

Joanie, the Highbridge "Ricky" site you posted about is under scrutiny by people who've donated money to them. If you read the old comments here, someone even asked the folks that run the page to show where their money was going, and their comments were deleted. Tiina and Denise are the only caretakers directly responsible for Charlie. He lives with Tiina, but Denise is very much involved, as you can see if you take the time to read her posts, watch the videos, etc. She has made Charlie a top priority in her life, and takes very good care of him. Please do some research about that other site before you post their link and promote them on this page. It would be a very bad thing for more people to confused the fact that the 2 pages/fundraisers are unrelated. One is legitimate and transparently documented (this one), and the other is neither.

Blythe, the vet bills have been posted to the page so we can see how the money is being spent. $5,000 went out the window quite a while ago, and he still will need help with his hips. His comfort and age are being thoughtfully considered, and they're being as conservative as his needs will allow. The site was shut down for a while, until his medical bills starting climbing past $12K. With more serious issues still untreated, it was reopened. I have no problem with still contributing when I can. I have confidence the money is going where it's meant to go.
