Mission East to West - Dream Kayak Expedition

The Story
Four daring Nepali kayakers have set out on a five-month-long expedition in which they will explore all of the major rivers in Nepal sharing stories and experiences with communities living by these rivers and exploring the landscapes that these rivers come from. This is Mission East to West.

Nepal has some of the world's best whitewater rivers, yet a lot of our rivers are being lost to shortsighted hydropower and road constructions. In a country that the whole world wants to explore, Nepali kayakers are still limited by resources and skills and are often only able to explore our wild places as part of commercial rafting trips. Team Mission East to West is changing that. Four daring Nepali kayakers are leaving behind their jobs and families to explore all the major rivers of Nepal. In addition to kayaking all our best rivers, they will be exploring the stories of people living and depending on these rivers and bringing those stories to light through stunning photos and a video documentary.

The expedition started on November 3, 2018, from the holy Bagmati river in Kathmandu. They have already experienced so much, seen so much destruction, had many adventures yet there is much to be learned and shared. The boys are currently making progress on the Easter section of the mission.

The Team

Mission East to West is made up of some of the most daring Nepali kayakers who are dedicated to exploring and loving the rivers and river community in Nepal. They are all dedicated members of the Nepal Kayak Club, working to bring whitewater training and events to Nepal.

Anup Gurung is the founder and president of Nepal Kayak Club.
Hari Ale is the captain of the Nepal R6 Rafting Team 2017 that participated in the World Championship 2017 in Japan.
Roshan Lama is a member of the Nepal R6 Rafting Team 2017 that participated in the World Championship 2017 in Japan.
Tarjan Gurung is a member of the Nepal R6 Rafting Team 2017 that participated in the World Championship 2017 in Japan.
We welcome competent paddler and explorer friends to join us on portions of our journey.

The Costs

The main costs of this expedition are transport and food and accommodation. Paddling all major rivers, and exploring many watersheds means that there is a lot of transport involved. The team has been sponsored for some private jeep rides, but are mostly using local transportation and porters to get to remote put-ins. Still, with the number of rivers involved in this mission, the transport costs are high.

We had the incredible opportunity of being supported by a high production documentary crew, but we decided against the offer as we felt that it would drastically affect our experience. We want to experience authentic Nepal on our own terms so that all that we capture is raw and unplanned. We are excited about this decision, but we lost some major funding because of it. This is why we are looking to you for support!

How can you support?

We are grateful and overwhelmed by the support of our friends from all over the world. We have set up this GoFundMe page to make it easier for you to follow, support and share our mission!
Friends in Nepal without a debit/credit card can also directly deposit money into our bank account or IME transfer the money to us (please message us for more info).
If you would like to host us or support us through gifts on any part of our journey, please message us on the Nepal Kayak Club page.
And of course, please share our mission with your near and dear ones!

Gratitude!
We are incredibly thankful for the support we have received so far. As a thank you, we will be sending friends who support us with 50$ or more a Mission East to West T-shirt (still in the design phase - we have so much to do!) and a post-card from our journey.
We will also be documenting our journey through photographs and a documentary, and you will be the first ones to get a peek at them!

Thank you!
Peace and Love,
