Dragged and Dumped: Athena

As Athena and her eight (8) less-than-one-week-old puppies were surrendered to a busy South LA shelter, bystanders began to take video and capture the heartbreaking scene: The young Akita-mix mommy dog being dragged, lifted and then shoved into the holding kennel by her fur by the one person she should be able to trust - her human - as the rest of the woman's family, including young kids, watched. The woman seems more concerned about getting the harness of Athena (so she could take it home) than the terror in Athena's eyes. Shelter staff were told that the family had decided to keep Athena's mate and father to the puppies - a male Akita.
These people could have been responsible and, as residents of the City of Los Angeles, had the two dogs altered at no cost. Instead, they let their unaltered dogs mate, let Athena get pregnant and give birth. Then, her body not even healed from whelping 8 puppies, her puppies were put into a plastic box, and Athena, was dragged across the concrete floor in the lobby at the shelter, like trash, as the woman's young children watched. It was like a Saturday afternoon outing for the family than a horrific act and betrayal of their loyal dog's trust.
A very busy, high intake shelter is no place for a new Mama dog. She is terrified, is very thin and is not producing enough milk. We are confident that Athena received no prenatal care and while the puppies all appear to be healthy, we must ensure that she and her babies get some high nutrition food and that she puts on some weight.
When the call came in about Athena - we knew this could not be done alone. This rescue is a collaboration between Akita Angels and Shepherds and Paws Rescue Inc. (SPARI). While Akita Angels and SPARI are separate organizations and are not affiliated with one another, we share common goals, a commitment to the well being of those most in need, and take a compassionate and pragmatic approach to rescue. Athena and her babies will receive the best of care.
