My brother Mike has recently been diagnosed with a recurrence of squamous cell nasopharyngeal carcinoma. He is only 47.

Mike was originally diagnosed with this rare form of cancer 20 years ago.  He began radiation treatments the same day his son, Bailey, was born.  After 62 intense radiation treatments and a grueling recovery, he won the initial battle against this cancer.  Although the radiation mitigated the cancer, he suffered consequential side effects over the years such as: loss of hearing, tooth decay, and salivary gland damage, making eating and swallowing difficult.

Two weeks ago, Mike began to have headaches and pain in his jaw. One morning he woke up unable to open his mouth. After going to the ER, we got the devastating news that his cancer had returned.  Due to his previous radiation damage and the rarity and location of this cancer, surgery and treatment options are very limited. Mike will need to get multiple opinions from the best oncologists across the country in search of a promising treatment plan.

He has an amazing wife (Reneé) and four incredible kids (Cassie, Bailey, Dean and Jax). We all know Mike is a champion and we have faith he will overcome this battle again! Mike and Renee will be leaving the kids in North Carolina and traveling to New York's Memorial Sloan Kettering  and Texas M.D. Anderson cancer centers over the next two weeks.

The financial aspects of this can be devastating to the family as they will have extensive travel and medical expenses.  We've set a goal to raise $10,000 to cover some of their expenses.

Please help if you can. If we all just give a little, it can help one family a lot. Thank you.

Hi All!
Thank you so much to everyone that has supported our Champaign for Mike! All that everyone has done is so greatly appreciated!

At this time, we have decided to raise the initial goal from $10,000 to $20,000. This will continue to help Mike and his family cover the heavy amount of expenses that they are under. Along with this due to his condition Mike and Reneé will now be staying out-of-state for a longer period of time than estimated.

Here is an update of the last 2 weeks:
Mike’s surgeries went well. He had a week to recover before his first week of radiation started, and his chemotherapy started up again.
We were grateful for that in itself!
Again, so thankful for the great medical team at Memorial Sloan Kettering.
Mikey finished his first week of proton radiation, and his first dose of Cisplatin this last week. He is definitely feeling the side effects and this is where his feeding tube is key in getting him the nutrients and hydration he needs. He is mostly comfortable and sleeping A LOT now as his body is fighting this battle.
We have had our ups and downs at times (which I’m sure is normal) but we are taking everything day by day.
The amount of love and support we continue to receive daily is really what helps us keep our spirits up and moving forward strong together. Thank you for that! Like Mike says..."Now I have a Champion status I need to maintain".
-Reneé

Again Thank You All! Mike and his family could not be more grateful for everyone's outpouring support and kindness.

First and foremost Renee and I want to thank all of you! Thank you, thank you , thank you! As you know this has been a very difficult time for us and your love, support and prayers have gotten us through this. We know we are not alone in this.
I just started my second week of chemo and I am already looking forward to the one week break next week! Then I will start Proton Beam Radiation Therapy along with Chemotherapy. The first week of chemo was hard. I battled a lot of nausea, fatigue and countless other side effects. The doctors tweaked some of the medications and added some more medications, this seems to be helping with the nausea. What’s crazy is that i went from taking a multivitamin everyday to 16 different medications right now. Good thing my wife is a nurse and has this under control!
As you can imagine, our life has flipped upside down so quickly. Renee and I are really missing the kids and being in our own home as a family. That is my ultimate goal and why I will give this fight everything I’ve got! To be home together again. To feel “normal” again.
We have been staying with our cousin Elizabeth for the last 3 weeks since we have been up here. We are blessed to have her and the rest of our NJ/NY family here. The hour plus drive to the treatment centers everyday will become too difficult for me as I get further into my treatments. Unfortunately, but JUST temporarily we will be moving into an apartment in NJ next to ProCure Proton Therapy Center where I will be receiving radiation everyday for 7 weeks. This is where my pride comes in and its hard, the donation part. We thank you so much for your donations as this will be a tremendous help with our living and travel expenses for the months ahead. We are humbled by all your efforts of support. Thank you again.
FORWARD, STRONG, TOGETHER!
Sincerely, Mike
