On Sunday morning, April 7th Mike Walton, a 48 year old mortgage banker and father of 5, was running with a real estate colleague in the Credit Union SacTown Run 5K, a fundraiser for the Sacramento Runnng Assocaition (http://runsra.org).  He collapsed just before reaching the finish line.  The EMT team at the finish line started CPR immediately, and he was transported to Sutter Hospital.  He was in a coma after a heart attack, and he never regained consciousness. He died in the ICU at Sutter, Tuesday afternoon, April 9, 2019.

He was a dedicated father and an extremely kind and generous person, especially concerning his personal time. His children always knew they had his support for whatever they were doing, or attempting to do.  He was always willing to lend a helping hand to any family, friends, or even strangers. His family was very touched by the numerous testimonials at his funeral by people he had provided support to. No matter what was going on in his life he always had time for others.

Before the 2008 recession Mike had been a very successful mortgage banker working for various major mortgage companies; however, like thousands of others in the financial industry he was laid off in 2008 and was unemployed and/or under-employed for a few years.  Their home and two rental houses were all lost in bank short-sales.  A few years ago he took a job with Pacific Private Money, a private specialty-mortgage company in Novato, and finally after several years of struggles, he felt that his career, family, and future were all looking very bright.

Mike is survived by his wife Andri, two adult children, Branden (21); Mason (19); one daughter, Hannah (14), and two step sons Andrew (14) and Brian (12). His wife Andri works in the Deli at Oliver’s Market in Windsor. She is active in the Northern California Indonesian community, with friends in Sonoma County as well as from San Francisco to Sacramento. His step sons, Andrew and Brian, currently attend schools in Santa Rosa. His daughter Hannah currently attends Windsor High, but during her elementary and middle school years, was on several championship cheer teams. His son Mason is also a student at Santa Rosa JC, studying cyber-security and computer science along with his General-Ed classes. Mason and Hannah also work part-time at the Oasis Laundromat in Rohnert Park (Mike was co-owner of the laundromat).

His oldest son Branden is legally blind, but is also a world-class athlete; he has run a relay leg in the California International Marathon (another SRA fundraising event) each December for the past 8-years.  He will be finishing his AA Degree classes at SRJC this next year and is thinking about attending Chico State. In 2017 Branden represented the US in the International Paralympic Athlete Championships in Nottwil, Switzerland, winning gold in the 800m and silver in the 1500m:  8-min video clip of the 800m race at Nottwil,  and the Gold Medal ceremony (Team USA took Gold & Bronze)
Branden is also hoping to obtain a part-time position as an assistant coach for the Windsor High School track team, later this year to help support the family.

Mike’s sudden death has come as a shock to his family, and they are facing financial hardship with hospital and funeral expenses, along with transitioning to a life without the major family breadwinner.  His Father & Mother are coordinating the fundraising team, but many colleagues from the Windsor to Novato communities, and his work colleagues, are volunteering their time and resources to assist with the fundraising and with the expenses.
