When I first moved to South Florida in 2000, one of the first persons I met was Michael Black. An incredibly talented, big hearted and knowledgeable guy who respected, and was deeply invested in the Everglades, Biscayne National Park and South Florida. I learned so much about the Everglades and the Florida Keys from Mike, and later from his wife Sarah Bellmund, who works with the National Park Service. Together they have a brilliant and beautiful daughter who is truly amazing. I have been very lucky to count all of them as friends and I love them dearly.
As some of you know, Mike, an avid skier, regularly traveled from his home in Key Largo to Colorado where he built a house in Pagosa Springs. On Tuesday, while skiing at Wolf Creek, Mike swerved around some skiers on the slope, lost control, cartwheeled off the course and hit a tree. He broke his back and several ribs and was airlifted to a Denver hospital. That night as he seemed to improve, he suffered a massive stroke. Mike is currently on life support and the prognosis is not good.
To all of you who know Mike, his wife Sarah or their daughter Elizabeth, please take a moment to think of them and hold them in your prayers.
UPDATE: It is with great regret that I report that Mike passed away this weekend. His wife has lost a husband, his daughter a father, his 85 year old mother a son and I have lost a great friend. Mike was an organ donor and his gift has now gone to answer the prayers of others.
The the bills for his care and for his family and funeral are still growing. Any and all support would be much appreciated. Funds will be held and disbursed from my law firm de gratis and 100% will go to help defray these many costs.
