Microblading for Cancer Survivors

Spende geschützt
My love for beauty and skin care started when I entered my teenage years. I remembers stirring up a mayonnaise concoction and slathering it on my hair, and smearing mud and clay masks on my face to remove impurities and make my skin glow. Back then, I didn’t know that one day I’d make a career out of it.

I’m Antoinette Haynes, a professional esthetician based in Greensboro, N.C. and owner of Serenity Suite Skin Care, where I offers services such as eyelash extensions, eyebrow threading, eyebrow waxing, full body waxing, skincare and facials. I’ve also developed my own line of skin care products.

My mission is to make people feel good about themselves. “Look good, feel good,” is my motto. It feeds my soul knowing I made someone happy with the way they look. Finding a way to give back to the community is also at the heart of my mission. And lately, a particular calling has been tugging at my heart.

I want to become certified in microblading, a technique that involves using a special tool to create hair-like strokes for a more beautiful and fuller-looking brow. It’s a permanent tattoo that lasts up to two years, and depending on each skin type, healing from the procedure requires different lengths of time.  The procedure can be performed on those who want an aesthetically, well-defined brow, but my motivation for pursuing the certification goes much deeper. I want to provide the service to cancer survivors who have lost their eyebrows due to chemotherapy.

I’ve never been diagnosed cancer, but as a volunteer for the Look Good Feel Better program at Cone Health Cancer Center, I’ve witnessed the devastation of hair loss and the effects of cancer treatments on the skin and general appearance. For the past four years, I’ve been volunteering for the program, providing skin care and beauty tips to cancer survivors to help them feel better about themselves; just letting them know they are beautiful and strong. It feels really good knowing that I’m helping them in some way.

So recently when I began thinking about ways in which I could use my talents to help others in my community, offering microblading to cancer survivors was the first thing that came to mind. My motivation for giving is deeply rooted in me. My mother is a retired nurse, and I grew up watching her taking care of others not only on-the-job but also outside of work helping neighbors and friends who were ill.

Right now, I’m working part time as a substitute teacher to supplement my income while I continue to grow my business, which I opened in 2010. But once I receive my certification, I will offer free microblading services for five cancer survivors each month. (Microblading on average costs $300-$500.) Adding this new line of work to my current services means that new expenses must be covered: the class alone is $3,000, insurance is around $700, and inspection is $500.  I will have to start buying new equipment and ink for the service. The search for all these things is very intimidating but I won’t give up!

Through my microblading certification, I’ll be able to extend my outreach to both men and women living with cancer in my community. Knowing one day I’ll be able to perform this service and help people feel good about themselves makes me very excited and very confident!

I just have to do it. I have to keep helping people, because that’s what I love doing most. So please - anything you can donate would be a big help!
