My debut CD, All The Possibilities: The Songs of Michael Wartofsky, will be a collector’s edition of my original musical theater songs, recorded by some of the best Broadway talent imaginable.  Produced by Sean Flahaven (a producer on 20 cast albums including Hamilton), this CD will keep your toes tapping and your heart singing.

With music direction by my colleague at Berklee College of Music, legendary Broadway conductor Eric Stern (Parade, Xanadu), the CD will feature the dramatic and vocal talents of these Broadway singers, in alphabetical order: Farah Alvin (It Shoulda Been You, I Love You Because), Kate Baldwin (Finian’s Rainbow, Hello, Dolly), Darius de Haas (Shuffle Along, Rent, Children of Eden), Annie Golden (Hair, Assassins, Violet, Orange is the New Black) Aisha Jackson (Waitress, Frozen),  Marcus Paul James (In the Heights, Rent), Michael Roberts McKee (Mamma Mia), Daniel Quadrino (Newsies, Wicked), Shayna Steele (Hairspray, Rent), Katie Thompson (Giant), Allie Trimm (13, Bye, Bye, Birdie), Alysha Umphress (On The Town)!  I am pinching myself that all of these extraordinary voices will be putting their spin on the tunes I’ve banged out over the constant protestations of my neighbors yet in the indulgent presence of my amazing co-writers, David Reiffel, Bradley Seeman, Kathleen Cahill, and Abby Casey.

This song collection will reflect my musical influences, from Barbra Streisand to Chaka Khan, Stephen Sondheim to Stephen Schwartz, Jason Mraz to Jason Robert Brown.  Richly orchestrated songs from my shows Cupcake, The Navigator, The Man in My Head and Running Back, will intermingle with songs that are not from shows yet sound like they should be.

The high-quality product requires an extensive budget, even with cost-saving measures such as a recording grant from Berklee to cover the studio time for some of the first instrumental recordings.  The remaining expenses include paying for the musicians (many of these orchestrations feature full horn and strings, all live!) guest vocalists, guest orchestrators, studio time in Manhattan at both Avatar studios for live rhythm section and Yellow Sound Label for vocal overdubs; editing, mixing and mastering, travel expenses, and marketing the CD to folks other than faithful supporters such as you.

Yes, you.  You can make a huge difference in making this dream project a reality!

Please accept my warmest thanks for any level of support, in the form of the rewards below.

How I met Darius de Haas, or Behind the Music: All the Possibilities CD, Episode 2. I can’t believe it was this long ago, but back in the hazy summer of 1995, I was sleeping on Christopher Davidson’s couch and diving into an intensive Yiddish language program at Columbia University run by Yankl Salant, studying alongside Tamar Havilio and Nadja Gemmel . Nadja and I were in a small group who ventured out to see the opera “I Was Looking At The Ceiling and Then I Saw The Sky”. I’ll never forget the feeling of being startled out of my seat by the young tenor who sang the second aria. His exhilarating voice and presence made my pulse race and my hair stand on end. I checked my program to make sure to remember his name, and then followed his amazing career for the next six years or so – falling in love with his recordings of songs by Ricky Ian Gordon, Adam Guettel, and of course Stephen Schwartz’s “Lost In The Wilderness” from Children of Eden, and catching him in Marie Christine at Lincoln Center. I finally got up the nerve to send him one of my demos. He was kind enough to respond, and conveyed he was pleasantly surprised by the R&B and soul influences in my music. When he was cast in a production at Boston’s Huntington Theater, it gave us a chance to meet and bond further over our love for every obscure Chaka Khan song ever released. I proposed the idea of writing him a song cycle; by 2006, this notion had transformed into The Man in My Head, a one-man musical in which Darius played six different characters, produced for the New York Musical Theater Festival by Matt Kidd, directed by Schele Williams assisted by Warren Adams, music directed by Aron Accurso and featuring bass by George Farmer and drums by Joe Choroszewski. One of the best songs from the show was called “Real Thing” and I was delighted when Darius told me he performed it in concert when he opened for Vanessa Williams. Still, it had never been recorded. In 2013, I orchestrated a big new version performed in concert by Jeff Ramsey, Terrell Foster James, Quitman McBride and David Keck. For my current CD project, I finally got the chance to record the band in Berklee’s Studio One in 2016 with Eric Stern at the podium, featuring five horns (Jeri Sykes, Mark Zaleski, Grace-Mary Burega, Randy Pingrey, John Liner) string quartet (Max Wolpert, Austin Lightfoot, Sandy Chen, Marta Roma) and a power rhythm section of Bas Janssen, Dave D’Aranjo, Eric Byers and Shachar Ziv. We added the final horn, a.k.a. Darius de Haas, in NYC this summer, who was as inspiring to work with as ever and gracious enough to squeeze his recording session in between his performances in Broadway’s Shuffle Along. By pre-ordering the CD at the link below, if you haven’t already, you’ll not only help me mix and master this new track, but you’ll be among the first sets of ears to hear the glory of Darius on this new recording, over twenty years after I first heard him sing! Thank you for following me on this journey, in whatever way suits you. I’m having such a ball putting it all together. https://www.gofundme.com/michaelwartofsky
