Join us and help Michael Pyykkonen in his second fight against Cancer!
On July 18th, Michael was diagnosed with Adenocarcinoma Stage 3C colon cancer. He had surgery to remove a nearly 7 inch section of his sigmoid colon with a baseball sized tumor that had caused a perforation. He is recovering well, starting to gain weight back, and now preparing himself for his coming battle.
This is the second time Michael has faced Cancer in his life. As a 5 year old he had the terrible misfortune of being forced to face and fight Stage 3B Hodgkin’s disease. He had no real idea what the terrifying visits and hospital stays were all about but he was the most positive and heroic little boy you could have imagined. His treatment back then included several surgeries, 6 months of chemotherapy, 6 weeks of radiation and then yearly follow up visits to track the effects of the medicines. He rarely ever let any of it get him down. He kept going to school, loved to swim, play soccer and for sure enjoyed his Taco Bell.
Twenty-three years have passed; Mike graduated from NAU, worked for several years at the Valley of the Sun YMCA and met and married his love, Charley Pyykkonen (Allen). They were married in November of 2018 in a beautiful ceremony in central Phoenix. Both have been working full time and growing their lives together, Mike as a General Manager at a pizza chain near ASU, and Charley as an Art Teacher of 3-6 year olds at a Montessori in Chandler. They live in a great 2 bedroom apartment in Tempe.
Michael’s journey will not be an easy one. He is through the first few hurdles and recognizes the challenges ahead of him.
He starts his first cycle of 6 months of chemotherapy on August 14th.
Mike has the gentleness and courage of a hero. He will always share a smile and kind word with whoever he meets and always sees the bright side in life. He just has a calm demeanor and rarely lets things stress him out.
We’ve started this page to help organize some assistance to Mike and Charley. By working together we can help ease their financial burden through the coming months of treatment and recovery!
