On Friday, March 3rd, an unexpected tragedy occurred. That typical day on my commute to work suddenly turned into my worst nightmare. On that fateful morning what can best be explained as a  freak accident, I collided with a car that flipped me in the air crushing my left shoulder while sending a jolt of searing pain down my spine.  My back felt like it was on fire... I nearly passed out. My life would never be the same again.

Less than a year earlier on April 23rd I crashed in a cycling accident suffering multiple injuries including a punctured lung sending me to ER and months of recovery.  And now this, fate would rear it's ugly head once more.

That stabbing pain from the burst fracture of the L-3 rendered me helpless to walk, In plain speak, my BACK WAS BROKEN. The Trauma Team doctors informed me that my recovery would be a long slow process, perhaps many months.  Fortunately, though I had escaped the unthinkable... permanent long-term paralysis.

For the better part of two months, I was hospitalized at the top Accu-Care trauma unit in Portland and then transferred to a skilled nursing facility.  I required a two-person assist for the first two weeks until the searing pain and inflammation subsided. My lifeline to recovery hinged upon the required use of a "clamshell brace" to stabilize my spine and daily physical and occupational therapy just to get back on my feet to walk again.

Initially, fear and the unknown gripped my senses.  How is it that someone who has prided himself on health and fitness his entire life could suddenly be cut down and humbled to the core? My future was a clouded fog of question marks. Would I be able to walk again?  Could I return to the saddle and ride my bike again?  Can I resume life as normal and regain my independence? Will I be able to return to an active lifestyle that is healthy for my overall well-being here in the Pacific Northwest?

The answer, an affirmative YES! One day at a time.

Meanwhile, the medical bills piled up exceeding $75,000 and will escalate to six figures with home care and out-patient physical therapy over the foreseeable months ahead.

I am now faced with medical expenses that are not covered under my insurance plan along with doctor bills, co-pays, lost wages, and alternative/holistic medicine to assist in my rehabilitation.

My immediate initial need is to cover about  $20, 000 for ER treatment, including x-rays, body braces,  ambulance transport, and housing bills.

During this down time, I plan to document and update everyone with my rehabilitation.  It will be a work in progress to share the anguish, pain, and hope on the road to full recovery.

The strength and encouragement of family and friends have helped me face this life-changing event with fierce determination.   I count my blessings thankful for each day that I have much more in my life ahead to offer the world.

Most of all I thank all of you from the bottom of my heart for giving so generously of your heart to help me in this time of urgent need to heal and get back on my feet once again and resume a sense of normality in my life.

Feel free to drop me a card, I would love to hear from you:
