Dec 4 Marathon Ben P. Supports JCN

Donation protected
On Sunday, December 4th Ben Pobjoy  will be walking a continuous double "meowathon" (85 kilometres) in Japan to raise funds for the Japan Cat Network’s Inawashiro Pet Shelter. We at JCN are truly grateful for this support- Cheryl Mori, JCN logistics!

"I'm really excited to do this walk. As someone who's been vegan for over 20 years, animals are near and dear to my heart!!!, " says Ben.

Located in the Fukushima prefecture, (2hrs from the radiated areas) our JCN Inawashiro Pet Shelter provided pet food stations and rescued  animals from the radiation-evacuated area surrounding the damaged Fukushima Daiichi Power Plant.  Work efforts and rescues still continue and we are glad to be a support wherever JCN can.

Why should you sponsor Ben’s walk for JCN’s Inawashiro Pet Shelter?

On March11, 2011, a magnitude 9 earthquake triggered a tsunami that damaged the Fukushima Daiichi Power Plant in Japan. This caused a nuclear disaster that displaced hundreds of thousands of residents. Many pet owners left behind companion animals like cats and dogs thinking they would be able to return in the days/weeks following. Unfortunately, it was 3 months before residents could return. Only rescue crews were permitted and restrictions were many...  Fast forward 6yrs, most of the residents still haven't returned to the homes due to dangers, aren't currently in pet friendly housing and only a lucky few were reunited with their found pets. However, we were glad to be a BIG part of the continued rescue efforts of many.

Nowadays, we at JCN support the idea and practice of when disaster strikes keeping animals and owners' together whenever possible is key. Evacuated together is a better solution where dedicated rooms can be setup for animals in carriers. This simple action helps prevent unnecesary heartbreak, more difficult rescues and keeps more people/animals safe together.

- The JCN Inawashiro Shelter was created in May 2011 in response to the nuclear disaster. Our director, Susan Roberts was the  key for organizing rescue efforts in the radiation-evacuated area within the 30km evacuated zone every week for years after...  As a small group doing BIG things, we are a volunteer run and donation funded organization believing in the importance of helping people help pets and TNR efforts to control animal populations.

- Since its inception, the shelter has rescued over 600 animals. We believe in a big foster pet network and small shelter concept throughout more local areas.  Our rescue work in the 3yrs following the disaster was instrumental in feeding/rescuing/rehoming more animals. When govt. granted permission (now residents only) we had teams going into the exclusion zone to feed animals, many of which would starve without regular visits/assistance. We still are pleased to be connected with those continuing the work we began.

- The JCN Inawashiro Shelter is a not-for-profit, no-kill shelter that continues to serve the people and animals of Fukushima whose lives remain overturned. We currently have wonderful international volunteers to come for a short stay and care for our 20cats/2 dogs currently living at the shelter under one roof! Catch a glimpse of volunteer life at the shelter with this video created by one of our volunteers..JCN shelter tour

Ben’s walk is an official Japan Cat Network-approved event. All donations will go to their Inawashiro Shelter.

Ben is personally covering all costs associated with the walk, and will additionally donate $5CAD for every kilometre he walks.
