Mental Health Awareness in Film

£2,708 of £12,000 goal

Raised by 65 people in 12 months

The past two years I have been slowly sharing stories of my own struggles with ill mental health, and I started discussing this at work.  I am a crew member of the Art Department in film and television in the UK.  The amount of positive encouragement from colleagues, informing me they would attend such a space/environment that I am looking to create, has spurred me on to start spreading the word of my ambition to help bring about mental health awareness in film. With the experience of working directly in film, understanding the pressures and demands, alongside my own treatments within various therapies, I would like to comfort and guide others in need of help.  I have participated in counselling, from talking one on one, to group sessions in Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, where I was introduced to learning mindfulness, meditation and behavioural coping skills.

By raising this GoFundMe page I am able to share this goal, and raise funds to further my ambition to gain the relevant qualifications needed to be able to assist in supporting those needing to talk, in confidence, to express themselves, to be present, and to be a positive step for those looking for support whilst working in film.  This could take place within a studio that I could set up so those in production offices can visit, along with the shooting crew, offering a space where crew can step away from set and lower their anxiety; calm themselves, offload, and ask for help.  I would like to be a part of their journey in advising individuals and understand what guidance and direction I could assist with.

I am researching courses I could embark on and memberships to therapy associations as a first step. I have worked out that to start me off I am looking at around £6,000.  Courses are anywhere between 1 to 12 weeks, and also 2 to 4 years, so I need the ball to start rolling!  I also will try to study around working, but without work I would need to fund myself and keep a roof over my head.
Money will be withdrawn, and kept safe and separate, to allow donations to keep coming in.

I already have meetings lined up with Producers and friends of mine connected to magazines and websites, in hope to raise more awareness.  I have been put in touch with other crew members whom I can connect with on this matter, all in hope for a change in the film industry.  I am gathering a growing list of names, and will be interviewing friends and colleagues about this issue putting together a short video, which I shall share on completion.

Thank you for reading and please do share.  I shall keep you all updated with my progression and please contact me at any time for more information or a chance to meet up.

Hello everyone. I hope this email finds you all well, warm and content. It has been a while since my last update. Some of you know that I am trying to work on moving to the States, to New York, for a number of months. I am still working and returning to London every three months. I have been learning about the mental health system here and making connections to a handful of film crew members too. I have attended my first Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training course and I am booked into a two day MHFA course in Slough, UK, in mid February too.

I have been gaining some help from close friends about putting together a business/research plan around the statistics of employment and mental health in the film industry. This statement is in its first draft and shall be presented very soon. Within this statement you shall all see where your donations will go and what the next steps are.

Thank you so very much for your time, your sharing of this information and for your donations. I am excited to see where this will all take me and the film crews in the UK, and maybe the US.

I'll keep you posted, but please do not hesitate to contact me if you have questions or suggestions. Thank you.

Hello from New York City! Yes I am here and networking, slowly but surely, and connecting to a few crew members of film here. I am also starting to connect with people within the wellbeing world, so all in all things are moving on this side of the pond too. If anyone has any friends, colleagues, or family out here in New York City, that could assist and help me move forward here, please do make contact with me, and a very big thank you in advance. Donations have slowed down, but each and every penny, pound, cent and dollar, is saved into a separate account and will be used to pay for courses in the new year. Sending love and warmth to you all, take care x

£2,248 raised in one month, WOW! You all are marvelous, each and every pound is gratefully received and I am chuffed so far.

I am in talks with a Head of Health and Safety in the film industry and that is taking this to another level, gradually but most definitely climbing to important heights.

Hello everyone, a HUGE thank you for all the donations! So wonderful!
I have to make withdraws from this campaign to be able to still receive donations, so please know that the money is being kept safe in a separate account. ALL the money will go towards short courses for me to learn a little more about how to teach mediation, mindfulness and art therapy, as well as to become a counsellor.
