DISASTER RECOVERY IN ACTION (DIRECT) PROJECT
A post-natural disaster activities for Palu and Lombok, Indonesia

“Giving is not just about making a donation, it's about making a difference.”

THESE Initiatives is currently collecting funds to launch DIRECT Project in West Nusa Tenggara and Sulawesi.

THESE Initiatives, a local community-based in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, will launch a post-disaster activity for two major disasters happening recently in Indonesia. For you, who isn't familiar with these tragedies, please see more information below:

Earthquake (7.0 magnitude) in Lombok - August 5th, 2018

Strong earthquakes have swarmed West Nusa Tenggara (WNT) from August 5th, 2018 which the aftershocks still continue to strike up until now. According to Indonesian National Board for Disaster Management (2018), the August 5th earthquake at least causing around 460 people lost their lives, 7,733 injured, 71,962 houses are damaged, and more than 417,529 people living in refuge. The soft soil structure in WNT and the ongoing tectonic plate shifts makes it prone for WNT to experience more earthquakes. As a result, people in WNT are currently living in distress and anxiety, which most are still sleeping outside of the buildings, anticipating the aftershocks.

Tsunami in Palu - September 29th, 2018

A massive earthquake with 7.7 magnitudes hit Palu, Sulawesi weeks after earthquakes in Lombok slowly decrease. As a result, minutes after the earthquake happened, Tsunami with six meters wave came and destroyed more than 65,733 houses (and still counting) and killed 1,571 (and still counting) people. However, this was not the end. Another rare event called liquefaction followed. Liquefaction is a phenomenon in which the strength and stiffness of soil are reduced because of the earthquake shaking. It is estimated that more than 1,000 people buried as a consequence of the liquefaction. Thousands of people homeless as well as under trauma and shock.

Disaster has proven to significantly impact the survivors' mental health. This can be due to the traumatic experience during the disasters, losing the loved ones, displacement, unemployment, and many more. The impact on mental health post-disaster ranges from depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and this has no exception for the people of Lombok and Palu. Therefore, there is an urgent need to address the mental health issues in both cities. This can be done by increasing the mental health awareness amongst the survivors, which will ensure the establishment of system of care for anyone affected with mental disorder. However, Lombok and Sulawesi which are located in the eastern part of Indonesia are known to have unequal resources compared to Java as the main island in Indonesia. These two islands have a very limited resource of psychologist and exposure to the psychological knowledge and treatments.

We will launch program to educate the community health worker (CHWs) in Lombok to have the skill in early detecting symptoms of psychological disorders and how to manage (simple) symptoms. Moreover, we also will cover the "do and dont's" in facing natural disaster (volcano eruptions, earthquake, tsunami). The CHWs will have the network to people in their sub-village, thus, this education will be passed to others. This will ensure the sustainability of the program.

For Palu, we will target adolescents and their peers in local communities. Adolescents make a great contribution in spreading this education to their own family, communities and schools. However, if the situation does not allow us to do the education, the fund for Palu will be donated entirely to a local community-based in Palu which dedicated to empower local adolescents to achieve their potential in life.

These activities will be held in January 2019 for about one week (we aim large participants) in each of the cities. We will invite two psychologists and two disaster experts to become educators. Fund will be allocated for the logistic of the events and handouts for participants (FYI, we already have the place for the events!). There will be NO salary for the experts (as they all volunteer to do this). Report for these activities will be made available in THESE Initiatives website on February.
