Period Products for Girls' Education

The Cause

We, Eva & Carli,  are two interns, working for the Rwenzori Child Care Initiative in Ruboni, Kasese District, Western Uganda. Our focus hereby lays on girl child education in the area.

After having conducted surveys within the community, it became clear that one of the challenges that young females are facing is a lack of period products due to the remoteness of the village and the precarious financial situation of many.
Thus, a lot of girls are kept from going to school during their monthly menstruation, missing around eight days of school per term. Besides missing an essential part of their lessons, which often leads to them failing classes, they are also exposed to public shaming and poor hygiene infrastructure in school. This causes not only mental damage, but also health risks for the girls.

With this campaign, our goal is to build a menstruation-friendly environment in Ruboni and its surroundings through:

1) providing reusable, hence sustainable, sanitary products

Together with the female part of the community, we decided to prioritize investing in menstrual cups. When cared for correctly, these silicone cups can be used up to ten years!

The pads that will be supplied are washable, desinfected through sunlight and can be used for more than a year. The pads will be offered to the women and girls who are not comfortable with using a cup.

Lastly, bio-degradable pads are going to be distributed in schools in order to make the girls feel safe in any situation and surrounding.

2) organizing workshops and programs in schools and in the community to change the general perception of periods and educate about Menstruational Hygiene Management. They are going to be held for both, men and women.
Also, once the cups and pads are bought, we will provide information and sessions on how to use and clean the products in collaboration with the respective companies.

As it is of great importance to us to find long-term solutions , which are non-dependent on our stay, and to come up with them in cooperation with the local community, all of the ideas mentioned above have been discussed with and highly approved by Ruboni's women and girls.
