Paddy Butler was diagnosed with motor neuron disease ( MND/ALS)  on December 13th 2013 at the age of 52. He had four daughters Elaine, Caroline, Sarah-Louise & Lorraine. He was married his wife Margaret for 34 years. He was a devoted father and a loving husband. He was heavily involved with his local Gaelic football club Moorefield GAA and trained the ladies football team for many years.

Paddy came back from an over-seas trip from the Lebanon  in May 2013 and his family had noticed a difference in his movements and speech, such as recurrent falls and weakness in his right hand.

After the diagnosis in December 2013, Paddy health deteriorated over  time. He lost the ability to walk, move and speak.
The effects of MND was devastating both to the family and Paddy's every day life.

The Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association (IMNDA) is the only organisation of its kind in Ireland. They are dedicated to working on behalf of people living with MND and their families and carers.

With the help of the IMNDA,  Paddy was able to access information and support to help him and his family with everyday tasks.  IMNDA  supplied him with iPads to assist with his speech, a nurse to provide help for the family and counselling.

Paddy Butler passed away peacefully on the 11th February 2016 surrounded by his family.

Company quartermaster sergeant ( CQMS) Paddy Butler was a member of the Engineer Group Defense Forces Training Center (DFTC)for over 39 years.
